THE QUALITY AND SAFETY OF TB DRUGS

Policy Statement
TB Drugs, like other medications are synthetic products made of chemical compounds, and
thus, are susceptible to chemical reactions which maybe brought about by environmental
factors and other considerations which may shorten lifespan and affect potency and
efficiency. For this reason, it is but crucial that TB Drugs are stored properly in a controlled
environment to ensure their quality, safety and potency.

Purpose of Policy
The purpose of this policy is, but not limited to, ensuring the quality, safety and potency of
TB Drugs for effective treatment in patients of various Treatment Regimen.

Guidelines
1. Continuous monitoring of the supplies must be constantly observed by supply and
dispensing officers;
2. Observe for tampering of newly issued supplies and check presence of breakage in the
wrappings;
3. Health personnel must observe first to expire, first out method in dispensing
medicines;
4. Supplies must be stored properly in a secure place, away from sources of water, direct
sunlight and from infestation of animals such as rats and cockroaches;
5. Supplies must be placed above the floor level;
6. Dispensing and supply officers must ensure adequate room temperature for the
storage of supplies;
7. Health officers must never administer a drug when they are doubtful of their quality;
they must check for discoloration and other manifestations that would establish doubt
in the quality and safety of the medication; If in doubt, it is better to discard a
doubtful medication than to jeopardize the treatment, much more, the life of the
patient.
