(12/01/2017) It is neither possible nor useful for a country to provide university places for a
high proportion of young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay Plan:

Introduction: it is not possible nor useful to provide access to university for a high proportion
of youngsters. Completely agree with the statement.

Paragraph 2: it is not POSSIBLE. [1] cost of building and running enough universities to
educate the increased number of students would be prohibitive [2] entry standards would
have to be lowered from their present levels, making it easy for youngsters to achieve the
entrance grades. Standard of univeristy education would be lowered.

Paragraph 3: it is not USEFUL. [1] vocational training is essential to have a workforce with
practical skills. Examples of different fields: construction workers, agricultural workers,
nurses..

Conclusion: fully agree with the statement.

(14/01/2017) Task 2: In many schools and universities, girls tend to choose arts subjects
(eg. languages) and boys choose science subjects (eg. Physics). What do you think are the
reasons? Do you think that this tendency should be changed?

Essay Plan:
Introduction -: refer to the task statement. State there are 2 reasons. Opinion the
tendency should be changed
Paragraph 2:
reason 1: gender-specific characteristics girls+arts/boys+science
reason 2: Traditional opinion that this cannot change.
Paragraph 3: need to change the trend. Students should be able to follow their desires
to study any subject that they want
Conclusion: Reason: traditional social stereotypes of choice of subjects is no longer
relevant. Repeat opinion.

(22/04/2017) Task 2: Some people think that people who choose a job early and keep doing
it are more likely to have a satisfying career life than those who frequently change jobs. To
what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay Plan

Introduction difficult to decide which leads to the best career life. Opinion despite
benefits of changing jobs, staying in the same job gives more satisfaction
Paragraph 2: advantages of job hopping [1] people acquire a wide range of skills
useful in the workplace [2] people have the chance to discover the type of job which suits
them
Paragraph 3: advantages of staying in the same job: [1] employees enjoy better job
prospects promotion/pay increases [2] making contacts and the enjoyment of support from
long-term colleagues.
Conclusion: staying in the same job = more satisfying career.

(29/04/2017) Task 2: Some people say that what children watch influences their behaviour.
Others believe the amount of time they spend on television influences their behaviour most.
Discuss both view and give your opinion.

Essay Plan:

Introduction: difficult to decide which has more effect. My opinion it is the content
of the programs
Paragraph 2: bad consequences of watching too much TV [1] children become
addicted to TV for entertainment. Result they neglect outdoor activities and adopt sedentary
habits [2] children who watch too much TV have less interaction with people around them.
Result they dont develop social skills.

increase the cost of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Introduction: International experts proposed many ways to solve global environmental


issues. Disagree that the best solution if to raise fuel prices
Paragraph 2 Increasing cost of fuel would lead to a reduction in car use, and thus a
reduction in exhaust emissions and [1] slow the process of global warming [2] reduce
dependence on fossil fuels
Paragraph 3 other measures more effective [1] restrict use of private vehicles

Conclusion: although increasing fuel costs would have some effect on tackling some
global environmental problems, there are more effective ways to do this.

(18/03/2017) Some people think that governments should ban dangerous sports, while
others think people should have freedom to do any sports or activity. Discuss both views
and give your own opinion.

Essay Plan:
Introduction: admit the dangers of extreme sports; agree with those who think that people
should be free to take part in them
Paragraph 2: 1st view: two reasons to ban [1] safety people may die or be badly injured [2]
some people who take part are too inexperienced or unfit.
Paragraph 3: 2nd view: agree the sports should not be banned [1] safety measures
experienced instructors should supervise: examples - scuba diving/paragliding [2] good
protective equipment and clothes are now available to make sports safer.
Conclusion: allow people to do dangerous sports, but act responsibly.

(06/05/2017) Some people think that good health is a basic human need, so the medical
service should not be run by profit-making companies. Do you think the disadvantages of
privatehealth care outweigh the advantages?

Introduction: Private health care is popular. Despite some drawbacks, there are more
adv than disadv of private health care
Paragraph 2: disadvantages: [1] high costs if private health care is not regulated -
examples: prescription charges, use of expensive equipment [2] quality of care may suffer if
profits determine care/treatment decisions
Paragraph 3: advantages: [1] speed no long waiting lists for treatment/check-ups [2]
may provide health care services to remote areas where health care is not accessible.
Conclusion: the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

(03/06/2017) As the number of cars increases, more money has to be spent on road
systems. Some people think the government should pay for this. Others, however, think that
the user should cover the costs. Discuss and give your opinion

(24/06/2017) Task 2: scientists predict in the near future cars will be driven by computers,
not people. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?Why?
Essay Plan:

Introduction computers will soon drive cars, already computer-driven cars exist, the
consequences will be wholly positive
Paragraph 2 reason: the advances in technology fully computerized cars have been
built, many people already navigate using satellite technology.
Paragraph 3 positive development [1] road safety greatly improved, will eliminate
human error and dangerous behaviour (drinking, speeding). Reduce need for safety
measures on roads (speed cameras)
Paragraph 4 positiive development [2] increase mobility for everyone by removing
need for testing; the elderly and people with health problems/disabilities

(08/07/2017) Everyone should stay at school until 18. To what extent do you agree or
disagree?
Essay Plan:

Introduction: despite arguments for leaving school early, I agree with this view.
Paragraph 2:quit school early 2 arguments: [1] not enough vocational
courses(examples) not all youngsters want to go to university [2] poor families
young people have to find jobs
Paragraph 3:stay at school[1] provide more training for a range of professions [2]
provide money for poor families, so that all children can gain good qualifications and
better future jobs
Conclusion: all youngsters should stay at school until 18.

(15/07/2017) Animal species are becoming extinct as a result of human activities on land
and in sea. Why has this happened? What's the solution?

Essay Plan:

Introduction agree with statement. Various reasons and urgent solutions needed
Paragraph 2: reason 1 pollution of habitats coral reefs toxic waste / reason 2
habitat destruction deforestation tigers in Indonesia
Paragraph 3: solution 1 improve sanitation systems oceans: control waste
dumping, ban whaling / solution 2 - role of zoos breeding programmes ban
poaching more wildlife reserves.
Conclusion: moral duty of humans to stop pollution and habitat destruction.
