I. Solvent Extraction

A. Determination of Mass of Seed and Kernel

The mass of the hulls and kernels are determined to establish a ratio of
mass in between the two

Materials and Apparatus

Material Apparatus
Weighing scale
Guyabano seeds Mortar and pestle

Objective

To determine the mass ratio of the kernel with the seed

Hypothesis

The kernel and seed has a definite mass ratio

Procedure

1. Prepare and weigh 50 grams of guyabano seeds

2. With a significant amount of force, pound the seeds with a mortar and pestle
until the kernels and hulls separate
3. Separate the seed kernels from the hulls
4. Weigh the collected seed kernels and hulls separately
5. Repeat the process for 4 more trials and record the data

Data and Results

Table 3.1 Determination of Optimum Time for Drying

Mass of Guyabano
Mass of Seed Kernels Mass Ratio
Trial Seeds

g g g/g
1 500 382.20 0.7644
2 500 384.40 0.7688
3 500 383.20 0.7664
4 500 396.80 0.7936
5 500 370.00 0.7400

Analysis

Using the data presented in Table sa taas, the average mass of the seed kernels
can be computed

382.2+384.4+ 383.2+ 396.8+ 370.0

average kernel mass=
5

average kernel mass=383.32 g

moisture loss=16

Similarly, the average mass ratio of the seed kernel to the seeds can be
computed,

0.7644 +0.7688+0.7664+ 0.7936+0.7400

average mass ratio=
5

average moisture loss=0.7666 0.77

Conclusion

The average mass ratio of the seed kernels to the seed is 0.77 or 77% of the
mass of the seed is the kernel
