Lesson Title Physical and Chemical Changes
Grade Level 5 Concepts(s) Change
Targeted
Performance Expectation Investigate physical and chemical changes
Science & Engineering Disciplinary Core Ideas Crosscutting Concept
Practice (Content)
1-Asking Questions When matter is changed, we 1-Cause and Effect
can make observations to 2-Energy and Matter
2-Planning and Carrying determine if the change was
out investigations physical or chemical

3-Analyzing and A physical change is a change

Interpreting Data where no new substances are
formed
4-Constructing
In a chemical change, a new
explanations substance is formed
Georgia Performance Standards - S5P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information
to explain the differences between a physical change and a chemical change.

Safety Considerations baking soda safety

The Learning Plan: ENGAGE: Hold up a sheet of paper and ask the students to identify what
Im holding. Then ask students how many ways we can change it. After students respond with
possible changes, do each one and ask is it still paper. Then, explain that physical changes are
somewhat reversible (shape and size changes). Do the same by wetting and then burning
another sheet of paper for 3 seconds and put in water. Discuss with the students the changes
they notice. How are the changes different from each other?

EXPLORE: Students rotate in stations.

EXPLAIN: Students will explain each station which change occurred.

EXTEND: Students research and write a paragraph about the differences between physical and
chemical changes in baking a cake. They will research how to bake a cake and explain the
physical changes and chemical changes.

EVALUATE: Formative Journal/Station observations and research paragraphs

Eeewww...What Happened to My APPLE?
Write a prediction: What will happen if a sliced piece of apple is left
out for too long?

1.) Observe the apple

2.) Carefully slice one piece

3.) Let it sit on the plate for a few minute (until you notice changes)

4.) Record your observations. Be sure to write exactly what you

observed. (Think Aloud In Your Mind...what properties of matter
changed...size, shape, color, etc? What changed about it? Be specific)

Oh no...Im Melting! What Happened to My Cup?

Write a prediction: What will happen if I put the cup in acetone?

Wear safety glasses and gloves at this station

1.) Observe the cup

2.) Carefully place the cup upside in the acetone substance

3.) Let it sit for a few minutes. Use the tongs to remove the cup

4.) Record your observations. Be sure to write exactly what you

observed. (Think Aloud in Your Mind...what properties of matter
changed...size, shape, color, etc? What changed about it? Be specific)
Whoa...Why is My Water Red?
Write a prediction: What will happen if I add red powder to water?

1.) Observe the water and red substance.

2.) Carefully pour 60 ml in a clear cup.

3.) Add 1/8 teaspoon of the red substance to the water.

4.) Mix them well and let it sit for a few minutes.

5.) Record your observations. Be sure to write exactly what you

observed. (Think Aloud in Your Mind...what properties of matter
changed...size, shape, color, etc? What changed about it? Be specific)

Yikes!...Why Am I Growing?
Write a prediction: What will happen when I mix yeast, sugar, and water?

1.) Observe the and the yeast

2.) In the container, add spoonful of yeast and 1 spoonful of sugar to

cup of hot water.

3.) Let it sit for at least 3 -5 minutes

4.) Record your observations. Be sure to write exactly what you

observed. (Think Aloud in Your Mind...what properties of matter
changed...size, shape, color, etc? What changed about it? Be specific)

Hmmm...Little Miss Muffet Sat Eating Her...

Milk and Vinegar?
Write a prediction: What will happen if I mix vinegar and milk?

1.) Observe the milk, observe the vinegar.

2.) In the container, add 1/4 cup of milk and teaspoon of vinegar

3.) Take turns mixing for least 4-5 minutes

4.) Pour it back and forth using in the strainer from one container to
another. Once you have a softened substance, place it on the paper
towel to dry.

5.) Record your observations. Be sure to write exactly what you

observed. (Think Aloud in Your Mind...what properties of matter
changed...size, shape, color, etc? What changed about it? Be specific)

YAY for Clay!

Write a prediction: What will happen if you combine blue clay with
purple clay?

1.) Observe the blue and purple clay separately.

2.) Take a small sample of each color and combine into one.

3.) With your group, take the combined clay and create something.

3.) After you created your object, give it a name.

4.) Record your observations. Be sure to write exactly what you

observed. (Think Aloud in Your Mind...what properties of matter
changed...size, shape, color, etc? What changed about it? Be specific)
