Benedictine Monks in the Philippines

In 1895, the Benedictine Monks arrived in the Philippines. They first began
missionary work in Surigao. Reverend Father Jose Deas y Villar, OSB was the founder
of the Benedictine community in Mindanao.

Since the spearheading of the Benedictine community in Mindanao, the

Benedictine traditions in the Philippines began. Quite a while after the foundation of the
group in Mindanao, the priests exchanged their habitation and apostolate to Balmes St.,
in Quiapo, Manila. Here they saw numerous poitical and social changes as our kin battled
under the Spanish and American colonization.

Regardless of these attempting times, the Benedictine priests remained and their
purpose in spreading the lessons of St. Benedict just became more grounded. Fr. Juan
Sabater, OSB, alongside the other Benedictine priests set up El Colegio de San Beda on
June 17,1901.

They devoted the school to the reason for Catholic training and the making of
Christian men of honor focused on magnificence and administration of God and nation.
