How to Score High in an Economics Exam

Hello students,

This answer guide will help students in realizing and avoiding common mistakes and score high by
taking care of small aspects.

Before you move towards the guide, here are a few things you should remember.

Read the question very carefully

Identify what is exactly being asked. This will help you remain to the point and clear in your answer
and will keep you from deviating towards irrelevant details. Remember, the examiner will have a lot
of copies to check and you would not want to annoy the examiner by writing long unnecessary
stories.

Focus on the Command Words

Command words such as Explain, Dene, Discuss, How etc. directs you about what the examiner is
exactly looking for. Focusing on and knowing about the command words will always help you
answering in the manner the examiner expects you to answer a question. You can nd a list of
Command Words in the answer guide.

Brainstorm, Brainstorm, Brainstorm!

This is very important for essay questions. Once you have read the question, identied command
words and what is being asked, roughly jot down a few bullet points (using a pencil) that you would
want to include in your answer and arrange your points in a logical order. This li le extra eort takes
hardly ve minutes but will not only ensure that your answer covers all important points, but will
also make sure that your answer is in a clear, crisp order with a smooth transition from one point to
another.

One Idea per Paragraph

Whenever you introduce a new idea, point or an argument, make sure it starts with a new paragraph.
With in a paragraph, every idea, point or an argument must be elaborated and backed by logical
reasoning and illustrated with examples and diagrams where possible. Do NOT make a statement
which you cannot back by a reason or an example.

Keep Your Tone Impersonal

Avoid using words such as I or we and stick to an impersonal and generic tone. You may, however,
use such words if your opinion or evaluation is asked for.

and when is it inelastic?
