II. Understanding the meanings of short written functional texts and short essays
in the forms of recount and narrative to communicate in social as well as
academic contexts.

a. Identifying specific information of narrative text.
b. Answering the questions given correctly.
V. LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of the lesson, the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri
Banjarmasin will be able to identify specific information of narrative text by
answering the questions given with 90% accuracy.
VI. TEACHING MATERIAL
Oral and written narrative text.
1. Social function
a. To tell a story about something or someone.
b. To entertain or amuse, stimulate emotions, motivate, give and teach the
readers.
c. A narrative story usually has moral value.
Once upon a time, there was a girl named Belle. She lived with her father and
her sisters in a small village.
Belle was a beautiful girl. She was also hard-working. She always helped her
father on the farm.
One day, her father set out for the city. He saw an old castle and went in. No-
one was in but there was food on the table. Then he walked around the castle. He
picked a rose from garden for Belle. Suddenly, an angry Beast appeared. He wanted
to kill Belles father unless Belle was brought to him.
Belles father told her daughters what had happened. Belles sisters ordered
her to see the Beast.
Belle went to see the Beast and had to stay at the castle. She felt scared,
lonely and sad. She tried to run away but was stopped by the Beast. The Beast
treated Beauty well. Soon, Belle began to like the Beast.
One day, through the Beasts magic mirror, Belle saw that her father was
sick. The Beast allowed her to go home. Her father was happy to see her.
One night, Belle had a dream. A fairly told her that the Beast was sick.
Beauty hurried back and saw the Beast dying. She began to cry. Tears fell
onto the Beast. Suddenly, the Beast changed into handsome prince.
Belle and the Beast got married and lived happily ever after.
4. Linguistic features
a. Past tense : killed, drank, etc.
b. Adverb of time : Once upon a time, one day, etc.
c. Time conjunction : (when, then, suddenly, etc.)
d. Specific character : Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, etc.
e. Action verbs : killed, dug, walked, etc.
f. Direct speech : It is to make the story lively (Snow White
said, My name is Snow White). The direct speech uses present tense.
