CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METODOLOGY

A. Purpose of the Study

The purpose of research is to improve students speaking skill by using

Audiolingual Method at the second grade of ……………………… to active in

practicing English speaking in class. It is expected that the students can enjoy to

expressing their ideas opinion and feeling and can match dialogue with situation

and condition. Besides that, they can also get fun in learning English in school

especially for learning English speaking.

B. The Place and Time of Study

The place of research of teaching speaking by using audiolingual method

is at second grade of …………………... This research takes place for one

semester from March –June 2010.

The class under study is class VIII-B. Each class consists of thirty

students. The teaching process is carried from 07.15 am to 12.30 pm.


C. Method of the Research

In this research, the researcher uses the qualitative paradigm with

classroom action research. The research connected in three cycles. Classroom

action research method tends to rules of speaking or how to improve the speaking

English through audiolingual method. Every cycle consists of four steps. They

are :

1. Planning

2. Action

3. Observation

4. Reflection

On the other hands, of course, it uses the collaboration technique too, for example

the chain drill, response drill, and repetition drill; the answer question method

and repetition; or collaboration of three methods.

D. Subject of the Research

The subject of the research is the students of eight grade of

……………………………………... The researcher use the method and the

technique teaching speaking through Audiolingual Method.


E. Technique of Collecting Data

The technique of collecting data that is the researcher get the data from

the students especially for eighth grade of ……………………….. The researcher

attends to the data, which are the result of applying teaching speaking through

audiolingual method. The data was taked from:

1.Test

2.Observation

3.Interview

In the following section, the researcher explains about procedure of

teaching, speaking using audiolingual method. The procedure is dividing into

four stages. They are socializing audiolingual method, individually or grouping,

distributing dialogue script, and asking question and asking giving answer. The

researcher gave speaking skill test before did the presentation of lessons material

(pre-test). After giving the treatment, give the some test (post-test) then made

calculation of result from both test. Trough the cycle I, cycle II, cycle III, and

the next cycle if necessary in accordance with the targets that would like to

accomplish.

Each cycle consist of:

1. Planning

2. Acting
3. Observing

4. Reflecting

This research can discuss or collaborate with English Teacher and the others.

The design is as follow:

1. Socializing Audiolingual method

a. Teacher introduces Audio Lingual Method

b. Teacher states the aims of Audio Lingual Method

c. Teacher explains the definition of Audio Lingual Method

d. Teacher has the rules of Audio Lingual Method

e. Teacher checks students’ understanding

2. Individually or Grouping

a. Teacher asks students to apply the material of study by individually or

b. Teacher asks students to apply the material of study in a group

3. Distributing dialogua scripts

a. Teacher distributes dialogue script as teaching material

b. Teacher explains the use of dialogue sripts

4. Asking Questions and Giving Answer

a. Teacher asks to practice the dialogue by asking question and giving

answer to each group

b. Teacher asks each group to perform once.


F. Analysis of the Research

The analysis of the research uses the descriptive analysis. Based on this

method there has some advantages and weaknesses.

Some of the advantages of using teaching speaking using Audio Lingual Method

are as follows:

1. Using Audio Lingual Method make students more pleasure

from regular activities in class. It creates a relaxed atmosphere in the

classroom.

2. Using Audio Lingual Method can encourage the students

to communicate in English because there combinations between language

practice with fun and excitement.

3. By repetition drill can perform and practice the students’

ability in forming many kind of dialogues.

These disadvantages may not be serious problems if :

1. Language teacher realize that learning also takes place outside the

classroom.

2. Language teachers have to provide opportunities for language learner to

practice using the foreign language after the class.

3. Language teacher must be creative in providing learning.


4. Language teacher are expected to be fluent in the target language, which

seems to be a problem in rural places

G. Target of Study

The expected targets of this study are as follows:

1. Level of mastery in the skills of speaking at schools average 6 and expected

after using the Audio Lingual method will reach an average of 7.5 and 75

% from 30 students to increase proficiency in English speaking.

2. 75 % of 30 students will be able to perform an exercise habituation or

repetition of talking to produce improvements in the ability to speak English

3. 75 % of the students can following learning using the Audio Lingual

Method use pair work and group.
