What is EC-GSM-IoT?

EC-GSM-IoT is an evolution of GSM specified by 3GPP GERAN in Rel 13 (May 16)

EC-GSM-IoT is one of the 3 solutions supported by GSMA Mobile IoT Initiative
The solution introduces several enhancements to the GSM radio access layer to make
it compatible with LPWA target use cases
Extension of coverage up to 20 dB vs legacy GPRS)
Reduction of UE complexity compared to 2G (Target < 5$)
Longer battery life ( Target 10 years for metering case) when combined with Core
Network Power Efficient Optimisation ( PSM)

What is NEW: What is unchanged:

- New EC-GSM-IoT data and control - Same GSM network architecture enabling software
channels defined mapped over legacy GSM upgrade of BTS / BSC
/ e-GPRS - Same Packet Core Network as GPRS
- Coverage extension feature achieved by L2
and L3 repetition on control and data - Multiplexing EC-GSM-IoT traffic on the same
channels depending on the UE position spectrum and physical resource as GSM
- New class of device (+23 dBm) - Support of current class of device
- Improved Security ( same as 3G) - Re-using existing e-GPRS MCS
Rationale behind EC-GSM-IoT
Global Footprint
- 2G GSM is still by far the most widespread mobile solution enabling a global
footprint in Europe, MEA, S America and part of Asia. Global
- Most regions are using the same harmonised band plan in low frequency Footprint
(900 / 850)
- In M2M, 2G is the main solution especially for use cases where territory
coverage is a key requirement. Long
Long Range: Range
- Coverage extension of +20 dBm on existing GSM network showing almost
99% territory coverage in France or in European countries
Smooth Upgrade path Smooth
- A software upgrade on BTS / BSC only for several RAN suppliers Upgrade
- Low impact of IoT traffic on existing 2G network especially in early phase of
IoT
Low cost Module Low
- Firmware upgrade from existing 2G Module Cost
- Future proof by using multimode 2G+4G module

- EC-GSM-IoT enable operators to

address LPWA use cases
countrywide even in area not
covered by 4G at a low entry cost
- EC-GSM-IoT is complementary to
other 4G based Mobile IoT solutions
Territory Coverage in France (Source Arcep)
Target Use Cases for EC-GSM-IoT?

+ 20dB coverage on top of already large 2G GSM 900/850

coverage combined with power optimisation and cost reduction,
would enable to address LPWA use cases virtually anywhere

1 - Focus on use cases that requires a deep indoor coverage:

- smart metering Gas / Water / Electricity
- sensor in building / basement Ex: Wine Cellar

2 Focus on use cases requiring a wide area coverage

- environment sensors in rural areas
- large infrastructure ( rail track / pipeline)
- smart agriculture
Target Use Cases for EC-GSM-IoT?

Two demonstrations during MWC co-branded by Orange

Use case: Smart

Metering for Water in
Rural area
Chipset partner:
Mediatek

Key message is the ability to address IoT on

a global footprint extending the coverage of
existing GSM network and addressing areas
not highly populated

Use case: Connected

Vineyards
Deep indoor Sensor
Chipset partner: Intel
EC-GSM-IoT Pilots and Trials
Lab and Field Trial performed with Ericsson in France in Q1 2016 using an
early implementation (partial) of EC-GSM-IoT with a prototype chipset
from Intel
Objective: To evaluate the real coverage extension
- Lab and field tests focusing on Uplink coverage extension
- Field test in real condition deep indoor (basement)

Promising results for an early implementation

+ No impact on commercial 2G traffic

Lab test and field test on site Deep indoor testing showing
showing 18-20 dB performance better coverage than E-GPRS
Next steps on EC-GSM-IoT : Orange and supporters
Orange planning two pilots of EC-GSM-IoT in Q4 2016 with the two major
suppliers supporters of the technology
- Ericsson ( Western Europe)
- Nokia ( Central Europe)
Objective: To evaluate the End to end implementation of standard EC-GSM-IoT
in combination with the evaluation of Power Saving Mode to support IoT use
cases
The focus will be on use cases showing the advantage of EC-GSM-IoT
- Deep indoor location : Sensor - Smart Metering
- Wide coverage : Rural

Recent annoncement from Russian Operator (MTS) of plan for an EC-GSM-IoT

Pilot with Ericsson ( June 2016)
Ecosystem development:
- Orange collaborating with chipset and module makers ( Sierra Wireless) on
EC-GSM-IoT with objective to enable a multi-technology (2G+4G) approach
for Mobile IoT
- Orange proposes to host EC-GSM-IoT Plug-fest
Orange and partners will promote and share experience on EC-GSM-IoT with
interested operators within the GSMA group and outside.
