COUNTABLE/UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

SUSTANTIVOS CONTABLES / NO CONTABLES

Countable nouns: Can be counted and have both a singular and a plural
form.

We can use a /an or one in the singular form

And we can use.... SOME, ANY or NUMBERS in the plural form.

Ex.:A table - two tables

A learner four learners

One laptop Six laptops

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS:

SUSTANTIVOS NO CONTABLES

Examples: Coffee- Sugar - Milk - Water - Pasta

*Only have a singular form

-We cannot count them.

-We dont use a / an or numbers before uncountable nouns but ...we often
use SOME and ANY.
A: Is there any milk?

B: No, but theres some coffee

SOME / ANY / NO

We use SOME with uncountable and plural countable nouns in affirmative


sentences and offers.

Examples:

There is some rice.

There are some apples

There are some carrots in the refrigerator

Would you like some tea?

There are some mushrooms in the salad, but there aren`t any carrots

We use ANY with (..+..): Uncountable and plural countable nouns .

in questions and negative sentences.

Examples:

Is there any bread? There isn't any bread

Are there any onions? There aren't any onions

Is there any milk in the refrigerator? There isn't any milk in the refrigerator

Are there any apples in the refrigerator? There arent any apples in the
refrigerator.

We use NO (= not any) + uncountable or plural countable nouns, in negative


sentences.

Examples:

There is no milk = There isn't any milk


There are no potatoes = There aren't any potatoes

There is no salt = There isn't any salt

There are no oranges = There aren't any oranges

HOW MUCH? HOW MANY?

We use HOW MUCH.? .with uncountable nouns to ask about the quantity
of something.

How much milk is there?

How much sugar is in the can?

How much rice is in the bowl?

We use HOW MANY? With plural countable nouns to ask about the
number of something.

How many cans of lemonade do we need?

WE ALSO USE..HOW MUCH? TO ASK ABOUT THE COST OR


PRICE OF SOMETHING

EX. How much are these shoes? $80

MUCH/ MANY / A LOT OF / LOTS OF / A LITTLE / A FEW

We use MUCH with uncountable nouns, in questions and negative sentences

Ex: We dont have much money

We use MANY with plural countable nouns, usually in questions and in


negative sentences.

Ex: There arent many books in the bookcase.

We use A LOT OF... / LOTS OF.... with uncountable and plural countable
nouns, usually in affirmative sentences.

There is A LOT OF coffee in my cup


There are LOTS OF of apples in the refrigerator.

We use A LITTLE with UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS, in AFFIRMATIVE


SENTENCES.

Ex: There is a little cheese on the table.

We use A FEW with plural countable nouns, in affirmative sentences

Ex: There are a few magazines on the table.

There are a few pants in the closet
