Mung Bean Experimental Design

Project Purpose: To involve students in a real world scientific investigation in which they design a controlled
experiment in which only one variable is tested.

Problem: What household ingredient, when added to water, will cause mung beans to germinate and grow.

Top 3 Choices! Look over the research each group member compiled. Complete the table below on your TOP 3 choices.
Household ingredient #1 Sugar Household ingredient #2 Cinnamon Household ingredient #3 Coffee

What did you learn about this ingredient? What did you learn about this ingredient? What did you learn about this ingredient?

I learned that sugar comes in many forms - I learned that cinnamon can help grow Coffee has a caffeine content ranging from
sucrose, fructose, glucose- and and is a sprouts rapidly and can be a defense against 1.0% - 2.5% based on its weight. There are
necessity in both plant and animal lives. bacteria and disease also low concentration levels of theophylline,
Sugars are produced from plants after theobromine, paraxanthine, libertine, and
photosynthesis and is used to generate methyllibertine (other alkaloids). Proteins

polysaccharides into disaccharides- lactose,
maltose, and sucrose. With that said Sugar is
a common carbohydrate found in fruits and
vegetables.

Sugar is used to create energy in all living Cinnamon can help fight bacteria in foods Coffee grounds can be used to fertilize plants
things. Both in plants through photosynthesis, and prevent spoilage. It can help prevent and keep away small creatures that can

rinsed) coffee grounds can help with the pH
the food is digested it is broken down into levels of soil and the plant. Its also organic
sugars used for energy. which is great because theres no harsh

Title: Using Coffee Grounds to Grow Mung Beans

I. Problem:

What household ingredient when added to water will cause mung beans to germinate and grow?

II. Team Hypothesis:

If we add coffee to water, it will cause the mung beans to germinate faster and grow quicker than just water itself.

III. Experiment
A. Materials
Water 40 Mung beans Coffee grounds
Petri-dishes (4) Paper towel Post-it notes
Tweezers Beakers Graduated Cylinder
Glass stirring rod Ruler Camera

B. Procedure
Step 1: Label petri dishes with group names (2 control group, 2 experimental group) with post-it notes.
Step 2: Place 10 Mung beans onto 2 separate Petri-dishes (10 in each group, 10 for control group, and
10 for experimental group)
Step 3: Pour 25 mL of plain water into the 4 petri dishes labeled control group and experimental
group
Step 4: Measure 1.0 g of coffee grounds and pour into the 2 Petri-dishes labeled Experimental Group
Step 5: Transfer Petri-dishes by the window to give them sunlight
Step 6: Wait for the next day
Step 7: Take picture of mung bean growth results from the day
Step 8: Rinse the Mung beans gently under stream of clean water.
Step 9: Record any growth changes of the mung beans.
Step 10: Calculate the average growth of the mung beans for the day.
Step 11: Repeat steps 5-11 the next day.

C. The Controlled Experiment

1. Describe the control group
The control group will consist of the mung beans that will grow in plain water.

2. Describe the experimental group

The experimental group will be the mung beans in the petri-dish that will grow in the coffee
grounds & water mixture.

3. Identify the controlled variables of the experiment.

Amount of water, amount of mung bean seeds, time picture should be taken, amount of sunlight,
placed next to a window, same room temperature

4. Describe the independent variable

The independent variable is the coffee grounds & water mixture.

5. Describe the dependent variable

The dependent variable will be the amount of the mung beans that germinated/mung bean
growth in the course of 1 week.
