11. (a) A hollow shaft is required to transmit 600kW at 110 r.p.m., the maximum torque being 20% greater than
the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 63 MPa and twist in a length of 3 meters not to exceed 1.4 degrees.
Find the external diameter of the shaft, if the internal diameter to the external diameter is 3/8. Take modulus of
rigidity as 84 GPa.

(b) A machine component is subjected to fluctuating stress that varies from 40 to 100 N/mm2 . The corrected
endurance limit stress for the machine component is 270 N/mm2 . The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength
of material are 600 and 450 N/m2 respectively. Find the factor of safety using: (i) Gerber theory; (ii) Soderberg
line; (iii) Goodman line; and (iv) Also, Find factor of safety against static failure. .(May/June 2013)
12. (a) The layout of a shaft carrying two pulleys 1 and 2 , and supported on two bearings A and B is shown in
figure. The shaft transmits 7.3 k W power at 360 rpm from pulley 1 to pulley 2. The diameters of pulley 1 and 2
are 250 and 500 mm respectively. The masses of pulley 1 and 2 are 10 and 30 kg respectively. The belt tensions
act vertically downward and the ratio of belt tensions on the tight side to slack side for each pulley are 2.5:1. The
shaft is made of plain carbon steel 40 C8 (Syt = 380 N/mm2 ) and the factor of safety is 3. Estimate suitable
diameter of shaft. If the permissible angle of twist is 0.5 per meter length, calculate the shaft diameter on the
basis of torsional rigidity. Assume G = 79300 N/mm2 . .(May/June 2013)

(b) It is required to design a bushed pin type flexible coupling to connect the output shaft of an electric motor
to the shaft of a centrifugal pump. The motor delivers 20 kW power at 720 rpm. The starting torque of motor can
be assumed to be 150% of the rated torque. Design the coupling and specify the dimensions of its components.

13. (a) A cast iron bracket as shown in figure supports a load of 10 kN. It is fixed to the horizontal channel
by means of four identical bolts, two at A and two at B. The bolts are made of steel 30 C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2 )
and the factor of safety is 6. Determine the major diameter of the bolts if dc = 0.8d. .(May/June 2013)

1.5 (a)Asafetyvalve, 50 mm in diameter, is to blow off at a pressure of MPa. It is held on its seat by means of
a helical compression spring, with an initial compression spring, with an initial compression of 25 mm. The
maximum lift of valve is 10 mm. The spring index can be taken as 6. The spring is made of patented and cold
drawn steel wire with ultimate strength of 1500 N/mm2 and modulus of rigidity of 81370 N/mm2 . The permissib le
shear stress for the spring wire should be taken as 30% of the ultimate tensile strength. Design the spring and
calculate:
(i)Wire diameter; (ii) mean coil diameter; (iii) number of active turns; (iv) Total number of turns; (v) solid length
of spring; (vi) free length of spring; (vii) pitch of the coil. .(May/June 2013)

(b) A right angled bell crank lever is designed to raise a load of 5 kN at the short arm end. The lengths of the
short and long arms are 100 and 450 mm respectively. The lever and pins are made of 30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2 )
and the factor of safety is 5. The permissible bearing pressure on the pin is 10 N/mm2 . The lever has a rectangular
cross section and the ratio of width to thickness is 3:1 .The length to diameter ratio of fulcrum pin is 1.25:1.
Calculate: (i) the diameter and the length of fulcrum pin; (ii) the shear stress in the pin; (iii) the dimensions of the
boss of the lever at the fulcrum and (iv) the dimensions of the cross section of the lever. Assume that the arm of
bending moment on the lever extends up to the axis of the fulcrum. .(May/June 2013)
15. (a) A single row deep grove ball bearing is subjected to a radial force of 8 kN and a thrust force of 3 kN.
The shaft rotates at 1200 rpm. The expected life Lioch of the bearing of the shaft is 75 mm. Select a suitable ball
bearing for this application. .(May/June 2013)

(b) The tuning moment diagram of a multi-cylinder engine is drawn with a scale of (1mm = 1) on the abscissa
and (1 mm = 250 N-m) on the ordinate. The intercepted areas between the torque developed by the engine and
the mean resisting torque of the machine, taken in order from one end are -350, +800, +600, +900, 550, +450
and 650mm2 . The engine is running at a mean speed of 750 rpm and the coefficient of speed fluctuations is
limited to 0.02. A rimmed flywheel made of grey cast iron FG 200(p =7100 kg/m3 ) is provided. The spokes, hub
and shaft are assumed to contribute 10% of the required moment inertia. The rim has rectangular cross section
and ratio of width to thickness is 1.5. Determine the dimensions of rim. .(May/June 2013)

(b) A pulley is keyed to a shaft midway between two anti-friction bearings. The bending moment at the pulley
varies from - 160 N-m to + 500 N-m and the torsional moment in the shaft varies from 60 N-m to to 160 N-m.
The frequency of the variation of the loads in the same as the shaft speed. The shaft material is having an ultima te
strength of 540 MPa and a yield strength of 400 MPa. Determine the required diameter for an indefinite life. The
stress concentration factor for the keyway in bonding and torsion may be taken as 1.5 and 1.3 respectively. The
factor of safety is 1.5, size factor = 0.80 and surface finish factor = 0.85. ?(May / June 2012)
12. (a) Design a plain carbon steel centre crankshaft for a single
acting four stroke, single cylinder engine for the following data :
Piston diameter = 200 mm ; stoke = 400 mm;
Maximum combustion pressure - 2.0 N/mm2 ;
Weight of the flywheel = 15 kN;
Total belt pull = 3 N
Length of connecting rod = 900 mm
When the crank has turned through 30 from top dead centre, the pressure on the piston is 1 N/mm1 and the torque
on the crank is maximum. Any other data required for the design may be assumed ?(May / June 2012)

(b) Design a muff coupling to connect two shafts transmitting 40 kW at 120 rpm. The permissible shear and
crushing stress for the shaft and key material are 30 MPa and 80
MPa respectively. The material of muff is cast iron with permissible shear stress of 15 MPa. Assume that the
maximum torque transmitted is 25% greater thap the mean torque. ?(May / June 2012)
13. (a) Design and draw a knuckle joint to connect two mild steel bars under a tensile load of 25 kN. The
allowable stresses are 65 MPa in tension, 50 MPa in shear and 83 MPa in crushing. ?(May / June 2012)

(b) Two length of mild steel tie rod having width 200 mm are to be connected by means of I.ozenge joint with
two cover plates to withstand a tensile load of 180 kN. Completely design the joint, if the permissible stresses are

(b) An engine runs at a constant load at a speed of 480 rpm. The crank effort diagram is drawn to a scale 1 mm =
200 N-m torque and 1 mm = 3.6* crank angle. The areas of the diagram alx>ve and below the mean torque line
in sq. mm arc in the following order : +110. -132, +153, -166, +197, - 162. Design the llywkcc! if the total
fluctuation of speed is not to exceed 10 rpm and the centrifugal stress in the rim is not to exceed 5 MPa. Assume
that the rim breadth is approximately 2.6 times the rim thickness and IKK* of the moment of inertia is due to rim.
The density of the material of tho flywheel is 7250 kg/ms.
Make a sketch of the flywheel giving the dimensions of the rim, the mean diameter of the rim and other estimated
dimensions of spoke, hub etc.
15. (a) A journal bearing is to be designed for a centrifugal pump for the
following data:
Load on tho journal = 12 kN Diameter of the journal = 75 mm Speed = 1440 rpm
Atmospheric temperature of the oil = 16C.
Operating temperature of the oil = 60'C.
Absolute viscosity of oil at 60*C = 0.23 kg/m-s Give a systematic design of the bearing.

11 (a) The shaft of an overhang crank is subjected to a force F of 2 kN as shown
in fig. below. The shaft is made of 30Mn2 steel having a allowable shear strength equal to 100 N/mm1 . Determine
the diameter of the shaft. (16)

(b) Design a muff coupling to connect two steel shafts transmitting 25 kW power at 360 rpm. Tho shafts and key
nre made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (S M - 400 N/mm). The sleeve is made of grey cast iron FG 200 (S = 200
N/mm1 ). The factor of safety for the shafts and key is 4. For the sleeve, the fnctor of safety is 6 based on ultima te
strength. (16)
12. (a) It is required to design a square key for fixing
a gear on a shaft of 30 mm diameter The shaft is transmitting 20 kW power at 600 rpm to the gear. The key is
made of steel 50C4 (S^, = 460 N/mm2 ) and the factor of safety is 4. For key material, the yield strength in
compression can be assumed to be equal to the yield strength in tension. Determine the dimensions of the key.

(b) A rigid coupling is used to trnnsmit GO kW power at 350 rpm. There are six bolta. The outer diameter of the
flanges is 250 mm. while the recess diameter is 175 mm. The oo efficient of friction between the flanges is

380 N/mm*) and the factor of safety is 3. Determine the diameter of the bolts. Assume that the bolts are fitted in

Load on a hydrodynamic full journal bearing is 30 kN. The diameter and speed of the shaft are 150 mm and 1200
mm respectively. Diametral clearance 02 mm Sommerfield number is 0631, UD ratio 1 : 1. Calculate temperature
rise of oil, quantity of the oil. heat generated and type of oil required. (16)

A welded connection, as shown below is subjected to an eccentric force of 60 kN in the plane of welds. Determine
the size of the welds, if the permissible shenr stress for the weld is 90 K/mms. Assume static conditions. (16)

II. (a) The shaft of an overhang crank is subjected to a force F of 2 kN as shown in fig.

(b) Design a muff coupling to connect two Steel shafts transmitting 25 kW power at 360 rpm. The shafts and key
are mace of plain carbon steel 30 CS (Sy, =400\inm-). The sleeve is made of grey cast
in>n FG 200
<SU, - 200 N/mm2 ). The factor of safety for the shafts and key is 4. For the sleeve, the factor of safety is 6 based
cn ultimate strength. (16)
12 (a) A horizontal nickel steel shaft rests on two bearings, A at the left and B at the
right end and carries two gears C and D located at distances of 250 mm and -400 nun respectively from the centre
line of the left and right bearings. The pitch diameter of the gear C is 600 mm and thet of gear D is 200 mm. The
distance between the centre line of the bearings is 2400 mm. The shaft transmits 20 kW it 120 rpm. The power is
delivered to the shaft at gear C and is taken out at gear D in such a manner that the tooth pressure F |c of the gear
C and rlD of the gear D act vertically downward*.
Find the diameter of the shaft, if the working stress is 100 MPa in tension and 56 MPa in shear. The gear C and
D weighs 950 N and 350 N respectively. The combined shock and fatigue factors for bending and torsion may be
taken as 1.5 and 1.2 respectively. (16)

(1>) Design a bushed-pin i>pc of flexible coupling to connect a punp shaft to a motor shaft transmitting 32 kW
at 960 r.pjn. The overall torque is 20 percent more than mean torque. The material properties arc as follows;
(i) The allowable shear and crushing stress for shaft and key material is 40 MPa and 80 MPa iopccii\cly
(ii) The allowable shear stress for vast iron is 15 MPa;
(iii) The allowable bearing pressure for rubber bush is 0.8 N/mm2
(iv) The material of the pin is same as that of shaft and kcj.
Draw neat sketch of the coupling. (16)
13. (a) A rectangular steel plate 100 mm wide is welded to a vertical plate to form a
cantilever with an overlap of 50 mm and an overharg of 150 mm. It carries a vertical downward load of 60 kN at
free end. Fillet weld is done three sides of the plate for a permissible stress of i 40 N/mm2 . Determine the si^ of
the weld. (16)

(b) A knuckle joint is to transmit a force of 140 kN.
Allowable stresses in tension, shear and compression arc 75 N/mm2 . 65 N/mm2 and 140 N/mm2 respectively.

14. (a) A hcl.cal compression spring made of oil tempered cxbon steel is subjected to a
load which varies from 400 N to 1000 N. The spring index is 6 aid the design factor of safely is 1.25. If the yield
stress in shear is 770 MPa aid endurance stress in shear is 350 MPa. find: (i) Size of the spnng wire, (it) Diameter
of the spring, (iii) Number of turns of the spring, and (iv) Free length of the spring.
The compression of the spring at the maximum load is 30 mm. The modulus of rigidit y tor the spnng material
may be taken as 80 kN/mm2 . (16)

maximum fluctuation of energy per revolution is 15 percent of tbe energy developed per revolution. The speed

15. (a) Design a journal bearing for 12 MW. 1000 rpm steam turbine, which is
supported by two bearings. Take the atmospheric temperature as 16 C and Operating temperature of oil at 60 *C
assume viscosity of oil as 23 Ns'ur. (10)
