Leaders and Managers

There is a difference between a leader and manager; however, both leaders and managers play an

important role towards the success of any organization. In the article by Abraham Zaleznik, he

has shown the difference between a leader and a manager. I strongly agree with Abrahams

position that leaders are like artists, they have the great picture in their mind and from the vision

of the picture they can paint it even in a circumstance where there are no proper structures. While

managers will always seek to work where there is order and ensures there are structures to

enhance control and coordination, leaders can work even in chaotic situations. In any

organizational setup, the main objective is corporate success and optimization of profit and

shareholder claims. Leaders and managers in any organization have to dispense their duty in line

with these objectives. Leadership entails elements of human passion, vision, and inspiration

which are key to the corporate success of the organization while management traditionally

entails planning, organizing, directing and controlling resources in the organization for optimal

productivity. I strongly agree with Henry Mintzberg analysis of the managers job and support

the fact that the managers job has to move from the traditional planning, organizing, directing

and controlling resources to being more analytical and reflective in dealing with the day to day

organizational problems. This is to offer management that is visionary and supportive to the team

members.

Leadership and management should not be viewed as two different things as both are

necessary for organizational success. The two interwoven roles if adopted together can

contribute to higher organizational performance (Abraham, Jonathan, and Henry, 23). Jonathan

Gosling and Henry Mintzberg have further analyzed five mindsets that are necessary for

managerial effectiveness which allows a manager to integrate the various needs and demands

during management. In Jonathan Gosling and Henry Mintzberg analysis, they pointed out that an

action mindset, cooperating and collaborative mindset, a broad view-worldly mindset, an

analytical mindset and are reflective mindset is necessary for effective management of a

manager. This is plausible because, with the cooperating and collaborative mindset mixed with a

broad view-worldly mindset the manager will be able to understand the various challenges the

organization is facing and with an action-oriented mindset, necessary actions can be taken to

solve the existing problems in the organization. An analytical mindset and a reflective mindset is

necessary for boosting innovation and creativity in the organization while fostering participation,

collaboration, and cooperation among team members.

Finally, I take the position that organizations need people who are leaders and can be

good managers and managers who can be good leaders to perform the duties of both managers

and leaders concurrently within the organizational setup. As a manager, i need to develop my

management competency to be integrated with leadership qualities so that I can be able to

perform the traditional duties of planning, organizing, directing and controlling resources as well

as offer direction to my team members which is visionary and inspirational with human passion

which is eventually key to the success of the organization. I also need to improve the five

mindsets of a manager. By developing these five mindsets, I will be able to fully understand the

challenges the organization and team are undergoing and be able to offer analytical solutions that

are tailor-made to the problem. I will be able to strengthen team collaboration and participation

which will foster creativity and innovations which is key to any growing organization
