The Learning Plan

ENGAGE:

Give a toy (car, ball, and toy piano) to play with.

Ask the questions how did you move it? what happened when you pushed it? what
happened when you pulled it.

EXPLORE: A hunting we will go. Find things in the classroom that you can push or pull or push
and pull.
The students will go on a hunt in the classroom. Each student will have his/her bag and
be directed to find three items that they can push, pull, or push and pull.
Come back together as a whole group and sort items found in three groups (on a large
construction paper have the words and picture of pull, push, and pull/push).
Each student will sort his/her items and explain why they picked a certain category.
Other students will also give their opinion of their peers sorting.
Ask the questions what can you do with this item?, how do you pull/push it? Can
you do the pull, push, or pull/push the real object and not the toy form, e.g toy car vs. toy
car?

EXPLAIN:

Watch seseamestreat.org/STEM video about force and motion.

Explain the meaning of push and pull.
Introduce the terms force and motion.
Listen to Jack Hartman song Push and Pull on youtube.com.

EXTEND:

Take children out to the playground; practice pushing doing pushups; practice pulling by
doing pullups (on the monkey bars)

Jack Hartman song Push and Pull on youtube.com.

Opening/Hook/Initial Focus:
Bring objects used from before to practice pushing and pulling

<How will you ENGAGE students? How will you connect to prior knowledge and previous
lessons/content?>

Work Session:
Find things in the classroom that push or pull or need to be pushed and pulled
Come back together & create a push/pull Tchart (Tchart included)
Closing: <How will you close the class period? How will you summarize the days learning and
tie concepts together? How will you EVALUATE your students understanding?>
