The Universal Mind

Srinivasan Nenmeli

We all have a conscious mind which acts on the inputs from the

five senses. This is what we commonly call "the Mind" . If you

touch a hot object with your finger, you scream and immediately

pull your finger out. This is a conscious action. We also use your

our conscious mind to experience emotions--joy and sorrow. We also

feel sublime emotions, lifted from the mundane thoughts .You might

have experienced this when you see a scenic spot or walk into a

calm large cathedral or temple.

Most persons recognize and live in this conscious world--eating

,sleeping, working at something.

Then there is a the sub-conscious mind , working silently. Most

self-help books talk about this as the mind of power. This

sub-conscious mind works to solve problems ,pull ideas together

and suggest many things. Your belief systems operate a lot with

this sub-conscious mind. Many psychologists and hypnotists work

at the functioning of sub-conscious mind to build your

self-esteem, to change your behavior and lead a fruitful life.

You can plant positive thoughts in your sub-conscious mind by

affirmations, repeated chantings and so on.You are supposed to

implant positive suggestions at night in your sub-conscious

mind.All this is fine.

But there is yet another mind, "superconscious" mind or the

Universal Mind. Some call this the "cosmic mind". This mind is

repository of all the knowledge, data and facts about the workings

of nature. Scientist pull out small scraps of knowledge from this

vast treasury and make useful theories or inventions.

Please note that the famous equation of Albert Einstein E= m c2

existed before Einstein derived it and scientists used it to

convert mass into energy in atom bombs or atomic reactors.

Einstein was inspired to delve into this and develop a formal

means of logically deriving it. The same is true of all

discoveries of Galileo or Newton.

All our inner promptings, intuitive perceptions and "voices from

above" are manifestations of the Universal mind. How did

prophets, messiahs and great seers got their messages? They had

established a link with the Universal Mind.

Note that there is only one Universal Mind which activates all

living beings. There is this link with the Universal Mind for all
of us.In this, we are all commanded by one mind.

An analogy helps. In this computer age, we all know about giant

computer servers which big companies like Google and Yahoo have.

WE can access that for any piece of information or data from our

home computer or from our mobile phones. Likewise the Universal

Mind is the repository of all knowledge and wisdom. We have to

just establish the link.

How do we know that this Universal Mind exists? I cannot prove

this to you by logical means or physical experiments. But I can

suggest something to convince you.

We all have had moments when something strikes our mind. We act on

the inner prompting and success or favorable result ensues. It can

be a simple event like the following.

While walking on the road, I take the left road, instead of usual

route along the right road. I meet a long-lost friend. We are both

happy with this strange meeting. Then the friend gives a piece of

information to contact someone. This contact proves valuable to

me.

Such coincidences are no co-incidences at all or accidents. They

are the working of the Universal Mind which directs you for some
task or event.

How this Universal Mind is related to supreme Power or Divine

Power or God? In my theory, the Universal Mind is an instrument or

functionary of God. God is beyond this mind.God is universal in

several respects. The Universal Mind is one aspect or attribute of

God. Let us leave it at that for the present.

The basic question is : How to contact this Universal Mind at will

from our conscious mind? How to establish the link? As with

computers, how do we create a link with a website with our unique

ID?

Since ancient times, the mystic seers and religious leaders have

tried to develop various techniques. Religion is supposed to

explain and train us for this link. Most religions have the truth

or basic core techniques for this link; but somehow, in popular

efforts, the path has become muddled. There are many reasons for

this which we shall not dwell upon here.

Mystic paths and meditations by quieting the conscious mind is a

valid technique to form the link with the Universal Mind. If you

are sincere and warm hearted person, there should be no great

difficulty at all.
But our conscious mind has constant chatter. We have to still the

mind.Silence , both outward and inward, is the key. Meditational

techniques are meant to create this silence, at least for a few

moments--say a few minutes to begin with.

Be still and know ye are Gods! This indeed the kernel of this

path.

Mystics ,however, depending on their times and place, have

stressed several means--fasting,chanting,dancing,singing hymns,

walking or sitting with breath watch or control---all these are

methods for stilling the mind.Above all meditations are important,

along with chanting-- in my humble opinion.

What about rituals in temples, churches, cathedrals in many

different ways? They all help your mind to focus on the Supreme

Being who helps to establish this link with the Universal Mind.

Does He do it directly or indirectly? This is a moot point and I

would not be involved in arguments over this. Sometimes God or the

Lord may intervene directly; sometimes it is a gradual process

over months and years at the will of God. You may have to pluck a

fruit or let it fall naturally fully ripened. [Even the question

of one's effort versus Divine grace is a similar question.]

What happens after one establishes this link with the Unversal
Mind? This state is described in different ways in traditional

religions. One would be "universally happy", without fear and

anxiety of any sort --enjoying bliss; one would radiate peace and

joy. One could predict future happenings and help people or heal

the sick. One may do many 'miracles' as Jesus and saints have

performed.

Is establishing this link the end of the road in spiritual

denouement? It is not.

But this is an essential step like the graduation ceremony. You may

still face many trials and tribulations in life but you will be

guided almost effortlessly by the Universal Mind. Mundane life

will not be the same.

After establishing this link , one may live a normal life with

certain 'certitude' about divine powers or intervention. Or , one

may disengage from mundane life, distancing from everything like a

recluse. That depends on the Universal Mind which becomes the

director and you are a mere player or puppet "that struts and

frets upon the stage" of life [As Shakespeare would put it.]
