Bolivia is the most affected by climate change
La Razn / G. C.
Bolivia is one of the countries that suffers the most from the consequences of climate change,
less incident less on the phenomenon, agreement and studies carried out by the United
Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Researcher Jocelijn Franois explained that although Bolivia has very low pollutant emissions,
"it is one of the countries most vulnerable" to climate change, according to EFE.
The specialist attributed the fact to extreme poverty in the territory, variable ecosystems,
deforestation, unstable climate and tropical glaciers. Likewise, it was identified that the
frequency with which it happened in the great altiplano, the floods and the forest fires in the
Amazon zone, and glacier retreat increased.
Impact. While Franois said he can not make a realistic projection of impacts on biodiversity,
he said that the phenomenon has already affected aquatic systems, fog forests, species
migration and disease and pest emergence.
The UNDP presented yesterday "The impact of climate change on biodiversity" and "Climate
change and the challenge of health in Bolivia", two research aimed at contributing to the
analysis and attention to the effects of global warming in the country, he explained Mirko
Rojas, Consultant of the institution.
After gathering this dramatic and apocalyptic scenario on the part of specialists on the
dangers of Bolivian territory, the Forum participants warned that its effects can only be
mitigated by long-term efforts and policies, and at all levels.
"Much of the damage done to the health of the planet has no remedy," said FAN
Executive Director Karin Columba Zrate. "What is expected to achieve is a
stabilization of minimum climatic conditions that allow the continuation of life under a
highly impacted scenario. It is in our hands, as a society, governments and private
sector, to change our production, consumption and life practices to face and mitigate the
effects of climate change, "he added.
"From several studies and projections, there are serious risks in terms of climate for Bolivia. In
the altiplano we will see the disappearance of glaciers in the mountain range, which will affect
the ability to regulate the flow of water availability, affecting their populations. On the
contrary, in lowlands we will have severe floods that will affect the productive capacity and the
own ecosystem ", said Seifert-Granzin, of German nationality, with a wide trajectory in the
field of the investigation on the subject.
Natalia Caldern, Coordinator of the Department of Climate Change and Environmental
Services of the FAN, reported that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had
already established trends in climate behavior for South America, characterized by reduced
availability of water, Of glaciers, and of water resources between 15 and 20%, loss of 30% of
species, desertification of agricultural lands and loss of production, and sabanization of the
Amazon.
"This trend is already being noticed in our territory and the problem could become chronic,
which requires direct action from families, municipal authorities, national governments and
private entities," he said. (Source: ERBOL)
