DESIGN OF A WATERING

DEVICE FOR RIDING

GROUNDS
DeVILS Proposal Presentation by Udo Wagner
September 2017
STAKEHOLDERS

Amateur equestrians who are using a riding ground in a remote

area
The users have a drivers licence allowing to use cars with trailers
The users might not have a drivers license for agricultural tractors
RESEARCH RESULTS OVERVIEW

Most of the available solutions require connection to

a water network

Existent mobile solutions require drivers licences

for agricultural tractors
High asset costs
POV STATEMENT

User
A rider wanting to use a riding ground in a remote area
Need
A riding ground which is too dry needs to be watered
Insight
Currently users need to depend on weather as no practical solution
for watering of the riding ground is availabe
PROBLEM STATEMENT

A design is needed to water a riding ground in a remote area

without direct access to a water network and electricity.
REQUIREMENTS
REQ_001: The design shall work without a water network which is closer than 800m
to the riding ground.
REQ_002: The design shall work without an electrical network which is closer than
800m to the riding ground.
REQ_003: The design shall allow to distribute at least one Liter and a maximum of 3
liters of water per square meter per work cycle (REQ_005)
REQ_004: The design shall be able to water an area of at least 800 square meters
REQ_005: One work cycle shall take less than 25 minutes.
REQ_006: The design shall resist wind velocities of a maximum of 80 km/h
REQ_007: The design shall resist temperatures between -20C and 35C
REQ_008: The design shall not cost more than 2500
REQ_009: The riding ground shall not be damaged by the design
CRITERIA

CRIT_001: Cost
CRIT_002: Time effort for the watering process
CRIT_003: Amount of water which can be applied in one
workcycle
CIT_004: Appearance of the
CIT_005: Robustness
AHP ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS

Analyzation of criteria with respect to Users expectencies

Criteria 5 (Robustness) is most important
2nd important is Criteria 1 (cost)
Tradeoffs could be made with respecht to Criteria 4 (Appearence)
DESIGN ALTERNATIVES

Sol_001: Trailer with water drum and water distribution using the
potential energy of the water

Sol_002: Trailer with water drum and gas driven water pump
DESIGN ALTERNATIVES

Sol_003: Stationary solution with water reservoir, gas driven water

pump and manual watering using a hose
Sol_004: Stationary solution with water reservoir, gas driven water
pump and watering using a system of pipes and sprinklers which
are located at the edges of the riding ground.
Sol_005: Stationary solution with water reservoir, gas driven water
pump and watering using a sprinkler which is pulled over the
riding ground.
DECISION MATRIX

Mobile designs rate higher than the stationary designs

Design_01 scores highest due to good ratings for criteria 1 and criteria 5
3D CAD RENDERING OF FINAL DESIGN
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Get water from a remote location
Drive the trailer to the riding ground
Open the valve and start to drive over the riding ground for
watering
After watering close the valve and park the trailer outside the
riding ground
HOW THE DESIGN SOLVES THE
DEFINED PROBLEM
Usable without drivers license for agricultural tractors
Easy to use and robust
Cost estimation: about 1500
Using the design the users do not need to rely on the weather for
watering anymore. The riding ground can be used even during
longer periodes of dry weather
