Installing the Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

If you are using your personal computer to take a Language Placement Test, we require that you download and
install the SEB. All programs must be closed once you are ready to take the test so we highly recommend you print
this page.

Please follow the instructions below to install SEB on your PC before you plan to take the test. If you have any

1. Download & Install SEB

a. Use Firefox to download SEB for Windows (Windows XP and Windows 7)

b. Locate the file you downloaded in the above step. It is called SebWindowsInstall.msi. Double-click the file
to start installation.

c. Once the install is under way, agree to the license and accept the suggested default options.

2. Language Shortcut Keys

While you are working in the Safe Exam Browser, you may need to be able to type in both English and the language
in which you are being tested. If you need to add a language to your computer, go to this tutorial:

Follow these instructions to set up a keyboard shortcut for switching between languages. With more than one
language installed in Windows, the default shortcut keys to switch between input languages are Left Alt + Shift .

a. Try the keyboard shortcut in any program that requires you to type. Type a word, press the two keys Left Alt
+ Shift in this exact order, keep them pressed for a moment, and then type again. (If you already have
another shortcut setup on your computer, use your keyboard shortcut instead.)

If the keyboard shortcut worked and you were able to change languages, skip steps (b) - (h) below and go
straight to Step 3.

If the keyboard shortcut did not work (and you have more than one language installed), proceed with the
steps below.

b. Go to Control Panel.

c. Select Regional and Language Options and then select the Language tab.

d. Click the Details... button and then select the Settings tab.

e. Click the Key Settings... button.

f. Highlight the relevant line "Switch between input languages" and click the Change Key Sequence... button.

g. Select Switch input languages and use Left Alt + Shift, and click OK.

h. Repeat Step (a) above to test the keyboard shortcut.

3. Start the Test
Important: Only proceed with the following steps when you are ready to take the test. You will not be able to close
the test until it is finished.

a. Get the Test ID Code provided to you by the instructor/school.

b. Close all running programs and double-click on the SEB icon located on your desktop.

c. Enter the Test ID Code provided to you by the instructor/school and complete the test.

4. Exit the SEC Browser

To close the SEB browser, press the three function keys F3, F11, F6 in this exact order, and keep them pressed
until the browser closes.

5. Uninstall SEB
Uninstall the SEB once you have completed the test.

Windows 7

a. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

b. Select the SEB Windows program, and then click Uninstall.

c. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen during the uninstall.

Windows XP

a. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

b. Select the SEB Windows program, and then click Remove.

c. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen during the uninstall.
