TPACK/ SAMR ACTIVITY DESIGN

Your assignment is to design a lesson/activity that incorporates the elements of TPACK,

or SAMR, standards, and a focus on specific technology that will help the class in
meeting your teaching goals. (Here is a list of classroom tools if you need ideas).

** Refer to the grading rubric in the syllabus for assignment expectations. A complete
sentence is appropriate for short responses. A paragraph-length response is appropriate
for longer responses.

Your name:Allison OBrien

Grade level for the activity: 5th Grade

Content area (math, ELA, science, etc): Science

Integration model (TPACK or SAMR): TPACK

Technologies integrated:
Laptops
Class Camera
Projector

Activity title: Rock Jigsaw

Class demographics (describe your students):

My students are in 5th grade and are beginning to learn about Rocks or Geology. I have
given a lecture on these types of rocks briefly in the last class period. This is now their
turn to do research on types of rocks with their classmates.

Activity overview (describe the activity):

Students will be put into groups and assigned a specific type of rock. These students will
become experts on this type of rock by researching from websites that I have provided
with real, true information. The students will then comprise all their research into a power
point that they will then share with the class and be the teacher. By the time each
group has shared, the class will have notes on each rock category. The next class
period, the same groups will be given a class camera. We will be going outside and
looking around the school for examples of the types of rocks to take pictures of. These
examples will then be uploaded into their power points and I will post all of the power
points on my website for students to view when they need them.

Activity goal (describe what the activity will accomplish):

The goal is for students to make their own lessons and learn to do their own research.
They also learn to use the power point program on the laptop, and use a camera in the
process. By finding and writing down the information and then forming it into a
presentation, the students will remember things better than they would if I lectured them
about this topic.

Standards covered (pick from State, CCSS, NGSS, etc):

1. 5-PS1-3 Make observations and measurements to identify materials

based on their properties.

Procedure (describe the steps students will follow):

1. Get into groups of 4 people and get rock assignment
2. Go to http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/earth/rocksandminerals.html
and research facts about your specific type of rock. Find out info like how tough
the rock is, color, what they are made of, how they are made, etc. Write this
information down on a piece of lined paper.
3. Form a power point with all of the information about your rock. Make it a
minimum of 8 slides
4. Email power point to Ms.obrien19@gmail.com
5. Teach your power point
FOR THE NEXT DAY
1. Get in groups from previous day and come to get your class camera.
2. Bring your paper with the info on your rock with you and go outside.
3. Outside we will look for examples of your rock, when you find one take a picture
with your camera
4. Inside: Load pictures onto laptop using USB cable.
5. Add pictures to your power point at the end (one picture per page)
6. Send updated power point to Ms.obrien19@gmail.com
7. Present the examples your group was able to find.

Assessment (describe how you will assess student understanding):

I will ask questions during the students presentation to the class. These will be
questions on things that they may have missed that I will add the information for the
class to have notes on. After all of the groups are done with presenting, I could do a
short quiz on details that were said in the presentations. This quiz could be taken on a
tablet if the district has access to enough of them.
Personal reflection (discuss how the activity you designed covers TPACK/SAMR
principles):
As the teacher, I know that the content that needs to be covered is all the types of rocks
in Geology. I am able to help and correct students on this topic without any issues. I am
teaching it by having students find the information on their own, this could also be done
in a text book and done without a power point if I were to not use technology. Although,
for the purpose of TPACK, the students learn to use the internet and laptops to add
dimension to the lesson plan for the students.
