Little impact yet…

6
How soon will LEDs play a significant
role in Commercial Program Savings?
We think next year…

• New ENERGY STAR Integral lamps

• More eligible Products
8,000 MWh
• Enhanced incentives
36,000 lamps
• New marketing and education efforts
~20% of Commercial
• Targeted initiatives:
Lighting Savings
• Retail, Hospitality
2011
• Outdoor Lighting

What’s Missing? ~40 LED Exterior Lighting Projects
underway representing more than 1500 fixtures

8
How do we qualify commercial LED
products?

9

Taking it to ground level: Lessons learned
with the West Dummerston Covered Bridge

• Replace (8) 100W HPS

fixtures with LED

Dummerston Bridge
Contractor Quotes
• “This project was quite challenging for me as it was my first
experience designing and installing LED fixtures, I had many
concerns, will there be enough light?, will there be too much
glare?, will the white light be too harsh?”

• “Initially the project seemed a no-brainer for energy-savings.

Replace eight 100W (110W) HPS fixtures with ten 50 watt
fixtures. But then things got complicated…”

24
Dummerston Bridge
Contractor Quotes
• “first I found that the old fixtures were only using between 529
and 785 watts because they were cycling on and off due to their
extreme age. Most times when I crossed the bridge only 4 out
of 8 were on and they produced an average of only .59 foot
candles of output….”
• “Then after installing the new fixtures I find that the 50 Watt
fixtures are really using 66-70 Watts. (the manufacturer has now
revised the average system watts to 60)”
• “To make matters worse the built in motion sensor are detecting
nearby RT 30 traffic and keeping the fixture on High more than
needed. (I am working to resolve this issue currently)”

25
Dummerston Bridge
Contractor Quotes
• “Despite these minor setbacks the bridge is safer, better lit than
ever for the same or less [energy] cost and Overall I am very
pleased with the light produced. I am very satisfied with the
outcome of 8 months of work. From the feedback I have
received, every one else is very pleased with the results as
well.”
Stan Howe, Master Electrician

Other Efficiency Vermont Lessons
Learned?
• Overall Surprisingly Few:

• The driver is the weak point of the system

• Dimming challenges
• MR-16 transformer challenges
• LED misapplications
• Education in lighting is needed
