1. Air flows into a Converging nozzle as shown

a) Is the flow choked?

b) Find the exit pressure Pe and the back pressure Pb
c) Find the value of Pb that would result in choked flow

2. Air flows through a duct shown below, with A1 = 24 cm2, A2 = 18 cm2 and A3 = 32 cm2.

If a normal shock stands at section 2, compute:

a) The mass flow

b) M3
c) P03
3. At the entrance of an isentropic converging-diverging nozzle V 1 = 100 m/s, P1 = 150
kPa and T1 = 300 K. If the flow at the exit is supersonic and the throat area is 0.1
m2, determine the mass-flow rate. (Assume that the gas is air).

4. Fill in the following table for change in flow properties after a normal shock:

Property Increase or Decrease

P (static Pressure)
T (Static Temperature)
(Density)
Velocity
M (Mach Number)
P0 (Stagnation Pressure)
T0 (Stagnation Temperature)
S (Entropy)

5. A jet plane is flying at 11 km with a cabin pressure of 101 kPa and temperature of 20
C. A bullet is fired inside the cabin resulting in a 2.2 cm diameter hole. If the cabin
temperature remains constant and the air-flow through the bullet hole behaves like a
converging nozzle, with exit diameter 2.2 cm, calculate the time required for the cabin
pressure to decrease to one-quarter the initial value. Take the cabin volume to be 120
m3 and P= 23.5 kPa and T = 219.5 K at 11km
