Fayoum University 2nd Year Electrical Engineering

Faculty of Engineering Midterm Exam (1) Nov., 2015

Mechanical Engineering Dept. Mechanical Engineering (2) Full Marks: 55, Time: 60 Mins

Answer all the following questions:

Question (1): [20 Marks]

A thin plate is separated from two fixed plates by very viscous liquids 1 and 2,
respectively, as in Figure (Q1). The plate spacings h1 and h2 are unequal, as shown. The
contact area is A between the center plate and each fluid.
a) Assuming a linear velocity distribution in each fluid, derive the force F required to
pull the plate at velocity u.
b) Is there a necessary relation between the two viscosities 1 and 2?

Question (2): [10 Marks]

The surface tensions of mercury and water at 60C are 0.47 N/m and 0.0662 N/m,
respectively. What capillary-height changes will occur in these two fluids when they are in
contact with air in a glass tube of radius 0.3 mm? Use contact angle for mercury and water
are 130 and 0, respectively. Specific weight for mercury and water are 132.3 kN/m3 and
9.650 kN/m3, respectively.

Question (3): [25 Marks]

A 5m wide tank with an L-shaped cross section, as shown in Figure (Q3), has a gate which
is hinged at the top at it right hand end. If the tank is filled with water to a level of 8m
determine the torque required at the hinge to just keep the gate closed. Determine also the
force on the base of the tank and comment on why this is not the same as the weight of the
water.
