Chapter 8--Conditional
Thisis another type of adverb
clause.
You will learning about real and
unreal conditionals in the past,
present, and future.
A conditional sentence has
two parts.
A condition clausesomething
must happen first.
A result clausethe thing has
happened. Note: In what time
period is the result, past, present,
or future? Dont look at the tense.
Tenses
Ina conditional sentence, the purpose of
the main verb phrase is to identify
something that is real or unreal.

Thepurpose of the main verb phrase is

NOT to identify the tense or time period.
Present or Future Tense
The present tense tells you
that something is real, true, or
possible.
Past Tense
The past tense tells you that something is
not real, not true, or not possible.
Use real conditionals for things that
are true or possible.
Use unreal conditionals for things
that are not true or not possible.
How do you know if it is true or not?
Look at the tenses.
With conditionals, the tense
identifies real and unreal examples.
If I have time, I will read the book, The Privileged
Planet.
Is this possible? Will I have time?
Yes, its possible, and if I do have time, I will read
the book.
If I see my neighbors, I wave and say hello.
Is this possible?
Yes, I like my neighbors, so I greet them.
I turn on the air conditioning in my house if the
weather is hot.
Is this possible or true?
Yes, its just common sense.
Be careful with these next
examples! Look at the
tenses.
Tell me what is different.
1. If I went to Italy, I would rent a villa
and stay for a month.
2. If I saw Alejandro Sanz in person, I
would try speaking Spanish with him.
3. I wouldnt recognize Cristiano
Ronaldo or Lionel Messi if I saw them.
4. My neighbors Chihuahua, Frankie,
would bite my cat, Hester, if she could
catch her.
If I went to Italy, I would rent a
villa and stay for a month.
Will I go to Italy?
No, I probably wont go
because its a long way away.
Its expensive to travel. But if I
did go, this is what I would do.
Not true = unreal
If I saw Alejandro Sanz in
person, I would try speaking
Spanish with him.
Isit possible for me to see
Alejandro in person?
Probably not, we dont visit
the same places.
But if I did see him, this is
what I would do.
If my family goes to San Diego, we
will spend the day at the beach for
dogs.
Does my family go to San Diego?
Yes, it is only 2 hours away. There
are many fun things that families
and their pets can do together.
Yes, it is possible my family will go
to San Diego.
Possible = real
I wouldnt recognize Cristiano
Ronaldo or Lionel Messi if I saw
them.
I dont know what Ronaldo or
Messi look like, so its not possible
for me to identify them.
Not possible = unreal
My neighbors Chihuahua, Frankie, would
bite my cat, Hester, if she could catch her.
It is true that my neighbors have a
Chihuahua named Frankie.
It is true that I have a cat named Hester.
But its not possible for Frankie to catch
my cat. Hester is too fast and can climb
trees and fences.
Frankie has to catch Hester first, and
that is not possible.
Not possible = unreal
The tenses changed from
present to past.
That means the conditionals
changed from real to unreal.
