Assignment- I
Date of submission: 24 /08/2017

1. Enunciate the law of viscosity. What is the effect of temperature on viscosity of water
and air?
2. Define Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.
3. The dynamic viscosity of oil, used for lubrication between a shaft and sleeve is 6 poise.
The shaft is of diameter0.4m and rotates at 190 rpm. Calculate the power lost in the
bearing for a sleeve length of 90mm. The thickness of the oil film is 1.5mm.
4. If the velocity profile of a fluid over a plate is a parabolic with the vertex 20cm from
the plate, where the velocity is 120cm/sec. calculate the velocity gradients and shear
stresses at a distance of 0, 10 & 20 cm from the plate, if the viscosity of the fluid is 8.5
poise.
5. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled with
glycerin. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5 square meter
between the two large surfaces at a speed of 0.6m/s, if:
a) The thin plate is in the middle of the two plane surfaces, and
b) The thin plate is at a distance of 0.8 cm from one of the plane surfaces? Take
the dynamic viscosity of glycerin =0.810 Ns/m2
6. A square aperture in the vertical side of a tank has one diagonal vertical and is
completely covered by a plane plate hinged along one of the upper sides of the aperture.
The diagonals of the aperture are 2 m long and tank contains a liquid of specific gravity
1.15. The center of aperture is 1.5 m below the free surface. Calculate the thrust exerted
on the plate by the liquid and position of its center of pressure.
7. Derive the relation for a submerged inclined plane h* = h + IG Sin2/Ah
8. A vertical sluice gate is used to cover an opening in a dam. The opening is 2m wide
and 1.2 m high. On the upstream of the gate, the liquid of sp. gr. 1.45 lies up to a height
of 1.5m above the top of the gate, whereas on the downstream side the water is available
up to a height touching the top of the gate. Find the resultant force acting horizontally at
the top of the gate, which is capable of openoning, it. Assume that the gate is hinged at
the bottom.
9. A tank contains water up to a height of 0.5m above the base. An immiscible liquid of
sp. Gr. 0.8 is filled on the top of water up to 1 m height. Calculate:
a) Total pressure on one side of the tank
b) The position of the center of pressure for one side of the tank, which is 2 m
wide.

10. With neat sketches, explain the conditions of equilibrium for floating and sub-merged
bodies.
11. Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of the water pressure exerted on a
tainer gate of radius 8 m as shown in fig. Take width of gate unity.
12. Define the terms density, specific volume, weight density and bulk modulus.
13. Define the terms buoyancy, meta center and meta centric height. Derive the
expression GM= (I / V) BG.
14. A rectangular gate is 5 m X 2 m is hinged at its base and inclined at 60 to the
horizontal as shown in figure. To keep the gate in a stable position, with the help of
pulley a counter weight of 5000kgf is attached at the upper end of the gate. Find the depth
of water at which begins to fall. Neglect the weight of the gate and the friction at hinge
and pulley.

15. Find the volume of the water displaced and position of center of buoyancy for a
wooden block of width 2.5 m and depth 1.5 m, when it floats horizontally in water. The
density of block is 650 kg/m3 and its length 6.0 m.
