Martyrium Pionii in historical context
The article deals with the epigraphic and numismatic data used to
determine the time of the events in the Martyrium Pionii and the date of the
composition of the text. The main attention is directed toward cases of
Flavia Politta (Mart. Pionii 9), Rufinus (17), Terentius (18), proconsul
Quintillianus (1920) and neokoros Polemon. These cases were considered
by L. Robert, T. Barnes, R. Lane Fox, K. Jones and other scholars. Some of
the attempts to tie the characters of the Martyrium Pionii to the persons
mentioned in the inscriptions arent entirely convincing (esp. Flavia Politta
and Terentius). The other cases are quite reliable and confirm the date in
the text the year 250. We believe that the controversy surrounding this
martyrdom was caused by the wealth of its content unexpected for the 3rd
century, as well as Eusebius indication that it dated to the period of
Marcus Aureliuss reign. The latest very strong attempt to restore the
original text of the Martyrium Pionii, undertaken by O. Zwierlein, was
reduced to abridgement of the text by half. The necessity for additional
external evidence confirming the dating of Martyrium Pionii could be
discussed, but it is necessary at least to show that its text is authentic and
was composed fully in the 3rd century.
