CVL 500: Introduction to Structural Engineering

Assignment No. 4
Due Date: Week of November 14 (During Tutorial Hours Only)

Determine the factored compressive resistance for the following sections: The steel grade is
350 and column ends are assumed to be pin-connected.
a) A back-to-back angles of L127 x 127 x 13 with a length of 6.4 m and a spacing of 10 mm
for gusset plate. The angles are snug-tight bolted connection at quarter points along the
length.
b) - A W530 x 66 with a length of 5 m.
c) - A two back-to-back C310 x 45 channels with a length of 6 m and continuously welded
along the length. The channels are braced laterally at 2 m from the bottom of the column
in the direction of x-axis.
d) For the shown column, the factored compressive force was calculated as 754 kN. The
length of the interior column from top of the base plate to the bottom of OWSJ is 5.4 m.
Using this column length check the adequacy of HSS 152 x 152 x 6.4 Class C to carry the
factored applied load using manual calculations. If the section is not adequate, determine
the required thickness of this HSS to carry the applied load using the CISC design table in
page 4-52.
