This document contains instructions for a final exam in heat transfer. It includes two problems to solve: 1) calculating heat transfer rates for water flowing inside a heated pipe, and 2) calculating heat transfer rates and interface temperatures for a hollow sphere coated with insulating material. Students have 90 minutes to solve the two problems and calculate requested heat transfer values.

Department of Chemical Engineering Final term Examination Subject: Heat Transfer 1, CHE131 Term: Jan/May 2008 Examiner: Dr. Moustafa Azab Time: 90 min
1. Water is flowing inside a circular duct of internal diameter 2.5 cm
with a mass flow rate 1 Kg/sec. the inlet temperature of water is 20oc.length of pipe 5 m. pipe thickness = 3 mm, Kpipe = 20 W/mo.c, if the pipe is heated externally with hot oil so that the temperature of the external surface is 30oc over the temperature of internal surface at any point. ho = 140 W/m2 oc. Calculate:
Rate of heat transfer due to conduction
Heat transfer coefficient due to convection for the internal fluid. Overall heat transfer coefficient.
2. A hollow sphere of internal diameter 6 cm and thickness 1 cm is
coated with an insulator of thickness 0.5 cm. if the sphere contains a fluid of temperature 150oc and the surrounding temperature is 30oc. Ksphere= 20 W/m.oc Kinsulator = 0.5 W/m.oc Calculate:
The rate of heat transfer due to conduction only.
Temperature at interface between sphere and insulator.
