ENGLISH IV PRACTICAL HANDOUT

Objetivo: Interactuar con otras personas de forma escrita y oral para solicitar o
tomar pedidos en el contexto de un restaurant, adecundose a la situacin
formal o informal correspondiente, y haciendo uso de los verbos apropiados para
cumplir el objetivo comunicativo particular.

Activity description: The students must work on an activity to perform a


conversation at a restaurant; they need to have a conversation with a waiter or
waitress to ask for different types of foods or dishes. The conversation context
has to be based on a business lunch or dinner. The waiter can describe the
different dishes to the customer to give more details.

INSTRUCTIONS:

- Get together in groups of 3 or 4 four students.


- Decide which is going to be the reason for that business lunch / dinner.
- Once you decide the context of your conversation, work with your classmates to
create a conversation where the customers ask about and order different types
of food.
- Use the specific contents you have learnt in classes to create the conversation.
- The conversation must have Appetizers, Main Dishes, Side Dishes and
Desserts and Drinks.
- You can use the information given in the attached Extra Material 1, an English
Spanish dictionary and the examples given to create your conversation.
- You have 20 minutes to work with your classmates and finish the activity.
- Decide what character you will perform in the conversation and study your
interventions with your classmates.
- Stand in front of your class and perform the conversation with your classmates.

EVALUATION:

- This practical activity will have as a result one final grade after getting the
average of two evaluating rubrics, one evaluates the group performance and the
other one evaluates the individual performance.
- The final grade will be directly set in the intranet system as your fourth grade for
this semester.

EXAMPLE 1:

- Waiter: Are you ready to order?


- Customer: Yes, I think so.
- Waiter: What would you like?
- Customer: Ill have the fish with some rice, and a small salad, please.
- Waiter: Anything to drink?
- Customer: Yes, Id like a bottle of beer please. That will be all, thanks.
- Waiter: Ok, Ill be back in some minutes.

EXAMPLE 2:

- Customer: Do you have spaghettis and tomato sauce?


- Waitress: Well, let me check that. Would you like anything else in case we
dont have spaghettis?
- Customer: Id like to eat fish with mashed potatoes and a small salad.
- Waitress: Ok, would you like some wine?
- Customer: Sure, that would be great. Thank you very much!
