SERVICE CONNECTIONS

1.0 GENERAL

This Specification covers fabrication, galvanizing and testing of Iron Pipes used as Tubular
Service Connection Poles.

2.0 DESIGN LOADINGS

The Fabricated Tubular Iron Pole shall be able to withstand a load of 50 kgf (Tension) as
the Pole Top loading in all directions, applied at a distance of 0.6 Metres from the top of
the pole.

3.0 STANDARDS AND CODES OF PRACTICE

Unless otherwise specified, the materials and workmanship specified under this
Specification shall conform to the latest version of the appropriate British Standards. In
particular to:

BS 3601 - Part 1: 1987 - Seamless Welded Tubes

BSEN 10216-1 - Hot finished structural hollow section

BS 729 - 1991 - Hot Dip Galvanised Coating on Iron & Steel

Article

4.0 MATERIALS

The tubular pole shall be constructed with steel of grade S 235 JRH or any other higher
grade of steel used in the fabrication of hollow structures.

The flat iron used in the fabrication of "D" bracket shall conform to BS 7613-1994 and BS
7668 - 1994 or any other hitherto.

The chemical properties and mechanical properties of steel shall be in accordance with
BSEN 10216-1 and BS 729 - 1991 or any other standard hitherto.

5.0 CONSTRUCTION

5.1. Tubular Pole

The steel used in the manufacture of tubes shall be of grade S 235 JRH or any other
higher grade conforming to the British Standards given in Clause 3.0 of this specification.
The tubes used in the construction of service poles shall be seamless. However, spirally or
longitudinally welded tubes are also acceptable. The tubular pole and its components
shall be constructed as per Drawing No. DS&S - 66-2/98 given in Annex B, using steel of
grade S 235 JRH. The Steel used shall satisfy all the requirements under BSEN 10216.
No welding or threading arrangements with unions to maintain the length of the pole is
acceptable.

The full length of the pipe inclusive of the end seal, given in 5.2 below, may also be of
either centrifugal casting or produced by extrusion from the parent metal.

5.2 End Seal

The top end of the pole shall be sealed from ingress of moisture by completely welding to
size with a sheet steel of same grade as that of the pole or any other suitable
arrangement, using metal. Usage of PVC or any other non-metal component to seal the
top end of the pole is not acceptable.

Refer Drawing No. DS&S-66-2/98 given in annex - B of this Specification, for

constructional features.

5.3 "D" Bracket

This is constructed as per Drawing No. DS&S - 66-2/98 given in Annex B using flat iron
specified under BS 7613 - 1994 and BS 7668 - 1994.

5.4 Anchoring Device

This is constructed as per Drawing No. DS&S - 66-2/98 given in Annex B. M.S. Bar used
for Anchoring shall be welded to the Pipe in the same plane as that of the "D" Bracket.

3
CEB STANDARD 066 : 1998
Revised - September 1998

5.6 Welding of "D" Bracket to service Pole

This is constructed as given in Drawing No. DS&S - 66-2/98 given in Annex B.

The "D" bracket so fabricated as in Clause 5.2 above shall be welded to the Tubular Pipe
in the same plane as that of the M.S. Bar used for Anchoring of the Tubular Pole. The
welding shall have a good finish to prevent accumulation of water between the welding
and the metal interfaces. Strength of welding shall be able to hold the "D" bracket to the
constructed tubular pole without detaching from same for a load greater than 200kgf.

The structure so fabricated as above shall be first cleaned by sand blasting, necessary
holes drilled, cut into required size and necessary sheet metal working welding etc.
carried out before galvanizing.

5.7 Finish

All components shall be smooth, with corners rounded and free from sharp edges. All
burrs shall be removed after shearing, drilling or punching. The galvanizing on all items
shall be smooth, continuous, uniform and free from flux stains. Holes shall be free from
nodules of pelter.

5.8 Galvanizing

The complete fabricated structure shall be hot dip galvanized conforming to BS 729, and
treated with Sodium Dichromate or Pelter W20 Solution immediately after galvanizing to
prevent the formation of white rust. The preparation for galvanizing itself shall not distort
the mechanical properties of material. All components shall be effectively galvanized to
give a uniform Zinc coating of not less than 610 grams of copper per square meter of
surface ie uniform thickness less than 0.086mm.

5.9 Design Drawings

The design and dimension of the structure and relevant components are as shown in the
Drawing No. DS&S - 66/2/98 given in Annex B of this text.

6.0 MINIMUM TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Quality of steel for pipe - S 235 JRH

Length of pipe - 5.8 M
External diameter - 76.1 mm
Wall thickness - not less than 3.4 mm.

The grade and chemical composition of steel shall be S 235 JRH which is
accordance with BSEN 10210-1 (1994) and BS 7668 - 1994. Accordingly the minimum
tensile strength of steel shall be 389 Newton per mm.

finished product (tubular pole) at a height not less than 3.0 m from the Anchored
end of the Pole.

2. Packing

The complete galvanized structure shall be bundled together using GS wire, each
bundle having 100 Nos. of items. A label indicating the name and quantity of the
item shall be fixed to each bundle.
