SONOLINE Elegra Ultrasound Imaging System - System Overview

1.0 Introducing the SONOLINE Elegra

Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging System

1.1 General Overview

1.1.1 System Configurations

The SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound imaging system is a fully digital high-resolution system
with integrated Doppler and Color Doppler capability. The system is available in two config-
urations, the SONOLINE Elegra standard configuration with 256-channel images and the
SONOLINE Elegra Advanced configuration with 512-channel images.

1.1.2 System Versions

Two versions of the SONOLINE Elegra system exist. The first version includes systems
with system serial numbers (SSNs) below 7000. The second version, which is called the
Millennium Edition, includes serial numbers starting at 7000. The designation version is
not to be confused with the two available configurationsthese remain the same. Both ver-
sions are identical regarding system features, operation and performance, and can be
identified mainly by mechanical differences.
The general service concept of the SONOLINE Elegra system is the same for both ver-
sions. However, not all parts are interchangeable between the two versions. Some parts
are specific to Millennium Edition systems and cannot be used on systems with SSNs
below 7000. Therefore, one has to ensure that the correct material numbers (synonymous
with part number) are used when ordering parts. For compatibility information refer to the
spare parts section of this manual.
Visible external changes for Millennium Edition systems are as follows:
SSN shown on rear system panel starts at 7000
New Distribution Board (not interchangeable with SSNs below 7000)
New front wheel brake mechanism (not interchangeable with SSNs below 7000)
System name label is vertically aligned and appears on left system side panel (viewed
from system front)

1.1.3 System Features

The SONOLINE Elegra system is a software-driven platform. This platform is designed to
be upgraded over time to provide additional features, image processing algorithms and
performance enhancements.
Software upgrades are provided through an integrated magneto-optical disk drive that is
standard with SONOLINE Elegra systems.
The system software provides exam-specific applications and transducer-specific
imaging presets.

SONOLINE Elegra Ultrasound Imaging System - System Overview

The SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound system provides up to five user-programmable

presets for each exam/transducer combination.
These allow the user to construct a constant foundation of predefined imaging param-
eters for a specifically-targeted study. All user-defined presets can be stored to MO
diskette.
The system software, control panel overlay, and operating instructions are available
for the following languages:
English
German
French

Wideband RF Digital Beamformer

The Advanced Digital Beamformer combines individual channel data into ultrasound
beams using patented techniques. The electronics accurately, precisely and dynami-
cally control the ultrasound beam profile. A faster clock cycle preserves both detail and
contrast resolution. The high speed beamformer produces a finely sampled ultrasound
beam with superior spatial resolution. Following beam formation, the digital signal pro-
cessing chain applies powerful algorithms to extract the maximum amount of informa-
tion for display and quantification.
The SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound system employs high dynamic range analog to dig-
ital converters. Operating at 36 MHz and having 10 bits of resolution, these A/D con-
verters collect high fidelity ultrasound information. Each channel has its own dedicated
A/D converter along with special filters that are fine-tuned to optimize digitized infor-
mation. This fine-tuning provides superior contrast resolution, while the high sampling
rate provides superb detail resolution.
Dual Channel Processing provides increased frame rates for gray scale or color by
forming two receive beams from one transmitted beam.

Imaging Platform Processing Power

The super-computer equivalent speed of the SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound system allows
the real-time processing of data using Siemens patented image formation algorithms.
Micron Tissue Sampling Technology uses the temporal and spatial signatures of tissue
speckle data to produce exceptional contrast resolution.
Zero Loss Flow Processing uses 100% of the acoustic samples to produce excep-
tional slow flow color display.
Multi-Spectrum Synthesizer samples, analyzes and compounds multiple Doppler data
sets to produce highly sensitive and accurate Doppler flow estimation.

Channel Matched Transducer Technology

Wideband channel matched transducers are designed to preserve acoustic signal
fidelity on both transmit and receive.
High-density array transducers optimize and balance frequency, aperture and scan
format for each intended application.
Each transducer provides up to five imaging frequencies. Linear and small aperture
arrays can work in two different formats (steerable linear and virtual curved). This
allows all transducers to cover a variety of examinations and body types.

Control Panel
The SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound system provides an industry-exclusive control
panel featuring Heads-Up display. This feature allows users to keep their eyes on the
image throughout the exam.

A unique CINE display provides review capability of all the individual data frames that
make up the SieScape image

1.5.6 Color SieScape Imaging

Color SieScape imaging is a combination of live SieScape imaging and live Power mode
acquisition, using a Peak Hold display technology. All Power information is preserved dur-
ing image acquisition. Most importantly, the peak of the signal is saved for the compounded
Color SieScape image.
Color Siescape imaging provides same extended field of view technology as black and
white SieScape imaging
Color Siescape imaging is useful for showing the presence of blood flow and
2D -mode anatomy in exams such as OB, Abdominal Vascularity (for characterizing
aortic abdominal aneurysms), and Vascular studies with Vein Mapping or Grafts
Functions and capabilities available in black and white SieScape imaging also apply to
Color SieScape imaging

NOTICE Use of Color SieScape imaging requires prior installation of the B/W SieScape option.

1.5.7 3-Scape 3-D Imaging

The 3-Scape 3-D imaging feature can be used to image any structure where a view can-
not be achieved by standard 2D-mode ultrasound to improve understanding of complex
structures (for example, the coronal view of any organ and oblique (arbitrary) slices of fetal
anatomy).
Ultrasound data based on three-dimensional methods assist the diagnostic process and
are well suited to viewing and adjusting 3-Scape images (for example, arbitrary slicing, vol-
ume rendering, rotation and zooming in on localized areas of interest).

NOTICE Using the 3-Scape option requires software version 4.3 or higher and a 9 GB hard disk drive.

The 3-Scape option includes the following features:

3-Scape Setup Live: During 3-Scape Setup Live, one can optimize the image for
3-Scape acquisition and make system adjustments to provide information that enables
the system to compute the scan duration.
3-Scape Acquire: During 3-Scape Acquire, one can obtain 2D-mode images in a sin-
gle, continuous scan sweep, using careful scanning technique. One can acquire a
3-Scape image using either linear or rocked motion.
High-Resolution Reconstruction: To maximize scan and volume reconstruction speed
during acquisition and display, the system performs an initial low resolution volume recon-
struction. To obtain high-resolution images, select the High Resolution control.
Arbitrary Slicing: During post-processing, any arbitrary 2D-mode image plane can
be extracted from a volume with the orthogonal views shown simultaneously in a four-
quadrant display. This known as Multi-Planar Reformatting (MPR).
Volume Rendering: During post-processing, the system displays a maximum inten-
sity projection (MIP) reconstructed volume. The volume is composed of voxels, where
a voxel is the smallest element of a volume (three-dimensional pixel).
Full Review Interactivity: Images of anatomy appear in an intuitively straightforward
manner. When reviewing the volume, the 3-D image of an organ appears realistic.
Also, blood flow through the cardiac cycle is viewed as three-dimensional.

SONOLINE Elegra Ultrasound Imaging System - System Overview

1.5.8 Photopic
Photopic Ultrasound Imaging is designed to improve visibility of patterns and lesions
especially in low contrast organs (as typically found in abdominal and small parts exams).
Photopic imaging applies histogram equalization to the grayscale data to optimize the
brightness and contrast of conventional, grayscale, 2D real-time images and then colorizes
them. A color lookup table is then applied to further stimulate and take advantage of photo-
pic vision. Thus, Photopic imaging allows better contrast resolution, especially in more
homogeneous tissue and permits viewing of ultrasound images in bright ambient light.
Photopic imaging functions in real time and as a post-processing feature. It is available in
the following modes:
2D imaging
Duplex 2D/M and 2D/D
Dual 2D, including dual live
The Photopic feature is accessed through Page 1 of the 2D folder on the touchscreen.

1.5.9 SieFlow
SieFlow Imaging is a specialized 2D mode imaging feature that forms 2D-mode images
from the received echo data using a patented phase inversion technology. The images are
optimized for displaying blood flow, which provides the following advantages over compa-
rable Doppler data-gathering techniques:
Fewer complications caused by wall motion
Less dependence on scan angle
Improved visualization of hemodynamic patterns
Improved viewing of structures surrounding areas of turbulence
Demonstration of turbulence with minimal artifacts
The SieFlow feature is accessed through Page 1 of the 2D folder on the touchscreen.
