TIPS TO ANSWER THE READING SECTION

OF THE ACADEMIC IELTS EXAM.

Exercise type
A) paragraph headings matching.
step 1= scan the headings ( 30s)
step 2 = read ONLY the first two lines of
each paragraph.
step 3 = Go back to the headings to see if
something matches.
step 4 = Start picking the headings one
at a time against the text. (FIND KEY WORDS IN TEXT)
step 5 = if you cant find an answer put
a mark (asterisk) and continue the other
headings.
b) FILL GAP (words to select from box ; from text)
step 1 = Read the text thinking of possible
words for each gap.
step 2 Visualize words in the box and try to
include as many as possible in the text BEFORE READING THE ARTICLE
step 3 = Find the difficult missing gap sentences
in the ARTICLE to discover the word or synonym.
step 4 = put an asterisk to the difficult ones.
C) Paragraph Detail Matching
step 1= scan the detail sentences ( 30s)
step 2 = read ONLY the first two lines of
each paragraph.
step 3 = Go back to the detail sentences to see if
something matches.
step 4 = Start picking the detail sentences one
at a time against the text.(FIND KEY WORDS IN TEXT)
step 5 = if you cant find an answer put
a mark (asterisk) and continue the other
headings.
D) Characters / founders / Authors / Professional People who
created, discovered or developed important things in the ARTICLE.
MATCHING NAMES AGAINST IDEAS
Step 1 Do canning to find the names and bubble / circle the name.
IF HAVING 4 OR MORE CHARACTERS; USE SQUARES, PARENTHESIS,
BRAKETS.
Step 2 Go back to the ideas and start matching.
E) WRITERS VIEW POINS AND SUMARY OF ARTICLE.
Step 1 = Read question and take off the odd ones.
Step 2 = make a selection
