Steve Jobs speech at Stanford University in 2005 (Adapted1)

The following reading exercise is based on a speech delivered by Steve

Jobs at Stanford University in 2005. He was the previous CEO (Chief
Executive Officer - President) of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation
Studios. Read the text and answer the questions below.
I am honored to be with you today at one of the finest universities in the world.
I never graduated from college; this is the closest I have ever gotten to a
college graduation. Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life (Jobs,
2005).

Steve Jobs shared his story about college:

He left college in the first semester. Why? Well, his biological mother was a
young, single college student, and she decided to put him up for adoption, so
everything was organized and he was going to be adopted by a lawyer and his
wife. However, when he was born, they decided that they really wanted a girl. So
his parents got a call asking: -"We have a baby boy; do you want him? they said:
-"Of course! However, they were not graduate students. When his biological
mother discovered that his adoptive mother had never graduated from college and
that his adoptive father had never graduated from high school, she didnt want to
sign the adoption papers; she signed just when his parents promised that he would
go to college one day.
Consequently, 17 years later, Steve went to college; he chose a very expensive
college, and all of his parents' money was spent on his college expenses. He had
no idea what he wanted to do with his life or how college was going to help him.
So he left college trusting that it was going to be for the best. He was really scared
at the time, but then, he thought it was one of the best decisions he had made. As
a result, Jobs started taking those subjects that were interesting for him. It wasn't
easy. He didn't have a room, so he slept on the floor in his friends' rooms. Jobs
collected coke bottles for 5 (five cents) to get money to buy food. Jobs used to
walk 11 kilometers every Sunday night to get one good meal a week.
Reed College (thats the name of the university) offered, perhaps, the
best calligraphy class in the United States. Every poster in the campus
was beautifully handwritten. Steve Jobs took a calligraphy class to learn
about calligraphy styles. He asserts it was beautiful, historical, and artistic
in a way that science can't capture, he found it fascinating.
He affirmed nothing of this had an immediate
practical application in his life. But ten years later,
when they designed the first Macintosh
computer, everything made sense: it was the first
computer with beautiful typography. Then, if he
had never taken that calligraphy course in
college, the Mac computer wouldn't have multiple
typography styles. Then, Windows copied the
Mac and, now, all computers have different
calligraphed styles. When he was in college, it
was impossible to understand all this.
Then again, you might not understand your present now, but you will probably
understand it later, you will connect your present to your future one day; you have
to trust in something: your God, life, or karma, whatever. I have always believed
in this, and it has made all the difference in my life.
