1. CLIENT
Bobcat Company designs, manufactures, distributes and supports compact equipment for global construction,
industrial, landscaping and agricultural markets. A Doosan Infracore business, Bobcat Company is North
Dakotas largest manufacturer, and employs more than 3,300 people around the world.
We currently translate Bobcats Compact Excavator, Telescopic Handlers and Attachment Manuals and
Operator's Handbooks.
2.2. Audience
One of the rules when translating is know your audience. Translate information with the audience in mind. A
Service Manual will have a different feel than an Operation & Maintenance Manual because the user has
different needs and expectations for the documentation.
The table below shows the typical audiences for Bobcat documentation:
2.3. Process
Here follows the description of the translation process for this client:
The steps are: TR-Trados > ED > LQA > FM-Clean > Combined DTP Run 1 & Format QA > TECH PR >
> DTP Rework > TECH PR 2 > DTP Rework 2 > TECH PR Final > Delivery.
Technical PR changes are implemented in both PDF and bilingual files. Ensure to mark up any
graphics which should be translated (See sections Text for translation in graphics below and Decals).
Only French and German OMs for a new product go for client review.
Fix changes are implemented into bilingual files. If any of the reviewers changes cannot be
3
implemented in the bilingual files, you need to complete the following:
2. Delete all the changes you can implement into the bilingual files and leave in the PDF only
the annotations you cannot implement.
3. This annotated PDF will be sent to DTP at RUN 1, along with the MIF files created from the
updated bilingual files.
Do not confirm Lang Final files until the PDF has been reviewed as Lang final.
Publication date format should always follow the source format, i.e. (04-14) should be translated as (04-14)
not (04-2014).
The Version Date should indeed always remain exactly the same as the EN source manual.
For all languages the following terms are always to be left in English:
- DoosanShop
- Bobcat Company
Please note this is valid for all the Bobcat and Doosan documentation.
The general rule for measurements in the Bobcat documentation is to list the metric first and then the
imperial value between brackets. However, for hardware and product names there can be single occurrences
of measurement values (e.g. 2032 mm Dozer Blade). This applies to all Operation Manuals, Installation
Instructions and Service Letters. In future manuals we will therefore have both ways appearing in the manuals.
In order to avoid issues please always follow the English source, and keep the order as in the English source.
The decimal comma or point in the measurements will need to be localised according to the target language
usage (both in the Metric and Imperial measurements). The measurement unit alsoneeds to be localised.
Please ensure you follow the approved Appendix 2- Measurement Tableat the bottom of the guidelines.
Note
For the Specifications-only translation jobs (please make sure the Client name in the WO is Bobcat
Specifications) the only measurements used are metric. Please refer to the unit_overview.xlsx file saved to the
Reference Material folder on the FTP.
Note
Please make sure to use "l/min" as unit, instead of "lpm".
Note also that "l/m" is not correct either, since "m" is supposed to be used for "meter".
4
2.7. Table of contents/indices
TOCs can be in alphabetical or numerical order. The TOCs will be sorted by DTP at Run 1 and Language will
have to check that the order is the same as the English EU source layout, whether alphabetical or numerical.
When correcting the heading(s), only annotate the change to the heading in the body of the text and this will
automatically update the heading in the TOC.
In the Contents page of each manual please localise Belgium and Unites States of America in the addresses.
The same applies to the Foreword section for the addresses in the Declaration(s) of Conformity.
Hardware and displays stay in English i.e. the console in the actual machine, switches dials etc. Only call-outs
on figures will need to be translated.
If a figure contains a label, that label should be replaced with its localised version.
Please translate Spec chapter schematics (this is for Attachments manuals only).
2.10. Decals
Safety decals: these are numbered like 6589058. These are provided by client in all target languages. They
have to be replaced by DTP and cannot be modified.
All decals with code beginning with P- or B- need to be translated. As per client instruction, only what are
readable needs to be prepped for translation.
The illustrated situation is indeed wrong (an accident happened), but the idea is to focus on the fact that the
operator is still alive, thanks to the ROPS / FOPS cabine.
That's why we use "CORRECT"
5
2.12. Footers on the front page
The string Original Instructions in the footer on the cover page for all manuals must be localised.
Below are the translations provided by the client that must be used, please do not change these localised
strings:

The ISO Certification section has been recently updated and translated. Only the newly issued manuals will
contain this new version, while the old manuals that are only updated or translated in new languages will keep
the old version.
Therefore in the new manuals this section will not prepped and the localised versions will be inserted by DTP
at Run 1. No linguistic changes should be made to the translation at Tech PR. In case you spot an error in this
section, do not mark it up, but query it with the PM.
In the old manuals this section will be prepped and translated, but keep in mind youre not supposed to
change the 100% matches as they have been extensively used in the past manuals. In case you spot an error in
this section, do not mark it up, but query it with the PM.
6
2.14. Language Extensions
Your language extension should be added to the publication code on the bottom left corner of the front cover.
For a list of the publication codes and languages please see the Appendix 1.
The same language extension should be present on the top right corner of the front cover.
The Lubricants tables and the Warranty section have been localized separately and approved by the client.
They are placed in the OMs by DTP and should not be modified, therefore do not request any change.
Do NOT modify the Approved segments under any circumstances. Approved segments have been reviewed by
the client.
Please avoid editing 100% matches unless it is really necessary. We are currently working on a series of
manuals which all feature very similar sections such as FOREWORD, SAFETY and SPECIFICATIONS. We are doing
our best to keep consistent between all manuals so please DO NOT rearrange or rephrase sentences unless
absolutely necessary.

3. LANGUAGE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: REMARQUE :
Always be consistent with the reference material - for product names use the leaflets we were given
by the client. Please check the Reference Material folder in the Reference Kit on the FTP. Please
contact the PM for location and password.
In sentences with references to illustrations like Remove the plug (Item 1), do not translate item,
just leave the number in brackets.

In segments such as this one, please make sure that when the word order changes, the tags get
changed too.
3.2.1. Inconsistencies
This is a list of the inconsistencies that have been occurring in the manuals we have translated to date. They
should be occurring less and less now but please keep an eye out for them.
Although other translations might be correct or even preferred, please use these translations for consistency
reasons.
3.3.1. Apostrophes

4. THE TERMINOLOGY PROCESS
4.1. Terminology
Current Bobcat glossaries for FIGS are saved to the Glossary folder on the FTP at:
There is an Excel file for entering the new terms that are missing from the existing glossary. The file is saved
to the Glossaries folder of the Reference Kit on the FTP.
Add any new source terms that you feel are missing from the current Bobcat Glossary and the suggested
translation for your language. If you have any suggested changes for already translated terms, please add
these too. Before you add/change any terms, please copy the blank document to your own pc and email it to
the PM/MLL who will then update the master sheet.
4.3. Review
All linguistic changes should always be implemented in the bilingual files. Please make sure your bilingual files
are always updated (at LANG-FIX, TECH PR, TECH PR 2, or if you change text due to query answers, etc.).
When encountering the term "HVAC" in English, please make sure to translate/review it the same way as if you
would have read "air conditioning".
If you spot a problem such a typo or a mistake in the source, download the Query Log from your Work Order,
fill it with project details, your query and send to the PM via email.
10
5. QUALITY CONTROL
When doing a "search and replace" activity in any text, avoid doing your changes globally but accept your
changes one by one to make sure that:
- consistency is preserved
- there are not any changes in gender and/or number. If there are any such changes, ensure the text around
these terms changes accordingly (verbs, adjectives, and so on).
Grammatical and spelling errors erode trust and dilute the brand by:
1. Causing confusion
2. Presenting an unprofessional image
These errors imply a lack of respect for your user and erode trust. They are easy to avoid.
Maintain this image:
Follow rules of grammar and punctuation for your language.
Spell and grammar check all your work.
