English Language Problems of Overseas Students in Britain
Recently, a study about English language problems was conducted among
overseas students studying in Britain. It compared their problems on arrival with
their problems six months later. The results were made into a table.
It can be found in the table that more than 60% of the overseas students had a
problem in understanding spoken English on their first arrival. This rather high
number was possibly because they met many people speaking English in an
informal language that they didnt understand. As the time passed, they had learnt
those informal language from their friends and anybody else around them. That was
probably why there was a marked decrease in this number after six months.
The second most problem on arrival seen in the table was the speaking skills.
Fifty two percent of the students had this problem and it decreased only 10% six
months later. The reason of this condition could be listening or understanding
spoken English difficulties, the lack of vocabulary, the difficulty to pronounce the
words, or the lack of confidence.
Writing skills was an English language problem experienced by 15% of the
students on their arrival. Surprisingly, six months later, the number increased twice
as much as it was before. The students admitted that it was becoming harder to write
as they had to learn about making some kind of work, such as reports and essays.
There are only few students considering reading skills as their problem. It
might be not due to their inability to read, but their slow reading speed.
In conclusion, understanding spoken English was a major problem for
overseas students on their first arrival. However, this problem decreased gradually
six months later. Although the reduction was not so significant, the number of
students who had a speaking problem six months later was less than this number on
arrival. The students thought that writing was becoming harder as they write
reports, essays, etc. Therefore, the number of students having this problem increased
as twice as before. Reading skills was only a minor problem for the overseas
students, both in arrival and six months later.
