This report represents our work and presents our conclusion and recommendations. 2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION The investigated site is the WRPC Jetty / water front area within the Warri River, The adjacent onshore land from the investigated water front area is the NNPC Oil Facilities that are bounded by a wall fence separating the facilities from the Tjala community of Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. Based on Geologic setting, the site seats on the upper part of the present Niger Delta sedimentary basin referred to as pro-grade Niger Delta basin. The Niger Delta depositional basin is situated on the continental margin of the Gulf of Guinea in equatorial West Africa, between latitude 3° and 6° North and longitude 5° and 8° East. Generally, through the activities of oil well drilling operations in the Niger Delta region, three vertical sections of deposited stratigraphic sequences have been revealed. They are, an upper Delta top litho facies, called the BENIN FORMATION, and these overlie unconformably on the Delta-front Li AGBADA FORMATION, which is under lain by a Pro-Delta marine shale called the AKATA FORMATION. ho-facies ; known as the Geotechnical Investigation Report of WRPC Jetty Area 5 Dy JOAASAN Geotechnical And _DORIG TECHNICAL SERVICES INTERNATIONAL. The field investigation work involves the following activities carried out on site. (a) Soil Boring and Sampling: One (1no.) number borehole was investigated to 30m depth. The 30m depth borehole was drilled with a Pilcon Drilling Rig mounted on a boring barge. The drilling method of using percussive drilling with 8inchs and Ginchs diameter casings and Binchs / 6inchs shear was adopted in the field investigation operation. The drilling method or manner in which the drilling shear is lifted to a height of im or 1.5m above the drilled depth and then allowed to free-fall inside the drilling casing pipe under gravity to advance the boring into greater depth was used in the dr ing and sampling of the borehole. As the shear falls, it cuts through the soil such that the cut soil materials are retained inside the shear by means of its clerk, The shear is then brought to the ground surface where the retained soil sample is emptied Geotechnical Investigation Report of WRPC Jetty Area 6 "5 5 JOAASAN Geotechnical And ORIG TECHNICAL SERVICES INTERNATIONAL. 07 enmeering Nigeria Lined SEPLAT NIGERIA Geotechnical, Geology, Hydrology And Geophysical Consultant FURTHER GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPOSED SITE | j,.4e4 APRIL FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF BOUY MOORING DOLPHIN AND Bay Page 7 of 29 BREAST MOORING DOLPHIN AT WRPC JETTY out, and some collected as disturbed samples for strata identification. The shear is lowered back into the borehole and the boring process continues. During the boring, as the soil strata encountered may dictate, Standard Penetration Test was carried out at intervals of specific depth within the sandy layer drilled in the borehole. Also, as the bore hole drilling advance from sea bed level down to the depth where investigated bore hole was terminated, relatively undisturbed samples were usually collected from the cohesive clay layer at selected depth interval with a specially designed U2 sampler. Also, disturbed samples were regularly taken at depth interval of im and or when there is a change in the soil type or strata. The soil samples were examined and classified by an experienced driller, and who further logged the borehole depth for soil stratification. The soil description was carried out according to the recognized / recommended international standard reference BS.1377 - 1990: code of practice for site investigation. The disturbed samples were stored in bags, and as the case may be, undisturbed U2 samples moisture content was preserved immediately upon sampling by wax covering on both ends of the U2 sample tube. The collected soil samples were transported to JOAASAN office / laboratory in Warri for laboratory testing of samples. In-situ Vane Shear Test The portable field Vane tester is a tool, use for the determination of undrained shear strength of cohesive soils in-situ on site. The instrument is designed with three adapter vane blade (small, Medium, and Large), and the size of vane to be use for a particular test depend on the nature of the sample to be tested .To carry out the test, the vertical vane blade is inserted into the undisturbed specimen using a constant pressure until the blade is completely embedded. Then after, rotate the torvane until the soil between the vane blades starts to fail. Note down the reading from the torvane scale. The results from the tests are reported as shear strength (Cu) 40 the nearest 0.01Kpa. (d) Cone Penetration Test The Cone Penetration test was carried out at designated point with a 20ton Mechanical Cone Penetrometer Machine. The cone penetrometer machine is a precise instrument which measures the resistance to penetration into the soil layers by a 60 degree steel cone with an area of 10sq. cm. The test is carried out by locating or positioning the machine mounted on the barge at designated test point and the hydraulic frame machine secured to the barge surface by means of welded screwed anchors system. The screwed anchors provide the required reaction to hold the hydraulic frame in position while the cone is pushed into the subsoil below the water bed level. The mechanics of operation is that, the cone and the tube are pushed together to Geotechnical investigation Report of WRPC Jetty Area 8 JOAASAN Geotechnical And DORIS TECHNICAL SERVICES INTERNATIONAL. After taking of gauge reading, the tube is push to meet the cone and the procedure is repeated for further advancement of the cone into deeper depth, The recorded gauge values are correlative values to the relative density of the penetrated sub strata. The recorded gauge values are plotted against depths as they are recorded at each tested depth and results are shown in appendix 3 and 4 attached. ¢. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) Standard penetration tests are carried out in-situ usually in the non- cohesive strata encountered. The standard penetration test consists of driving a thick-walled 50mm diameter steel tube into the sand at the bottom of the bore hole by means of a 63.5Kg hammer dropping 75cm height. The number of blow required to drive 30cm after an itial penetration of 15cm is recorded as the SPT number (SPT N- value) The SPT N- value can also be used as an empirical measure of compactness (Relative Density) or strength of sand, The SPT number (N- value) can also be used as an empirical correlation with the CPT values recorded in Kg/m2. The unit weight of soil and or the density of soil were determined in the laboratory by using a simple metal ring (in this report, the oedometer ring was utilized) of known volume and filling the know volume of the ring with the soil sample and compacting as directed in B.S. 1377 specification for preparation of samples for the determination of unit weight and density of soils, and measurements were made with the electronic scale and values weighed, read and recorded. By mathematical calculations using related Geotechnical formula, the value of the unit weights and densities of soils were calculated for the specified soil sample. The results of the calculated values are shown in table here enclosed below. - Specific gravity test: The Specific gravity of the (clay and sand) soil samples was determined from the relationship between the ratios of the weight of a volume of the soil sample to the weight of ‘an equal volume of water. From various weighing that was made the specific gravity of the soil samples tested were calculated. The results of the tests are shown in table here with enclosed below. ‘Shear box test: The shear box machine used for the testing of soil samples to obtain values for $° in case of testing sand specimen and Cu with 6° in case of testing sandy clay, consist of a shear box cell made of stainless steel, split horizontally at the center of the soil specimen when operated. The shear box cell has in it, a perforated metal grill, and porous disc. The soil placed in the shear box (of 100 x 100mm dimension) with a perforated grill under and the soil sample is compacted to test required standard. The shear box cell arrangement during test process is grill - soil specimen - grill. Tests on soil specimen are conducted by the application of a vertical load to the top of the sample by means of weights. After the application of the required load, a shearing force is gradually exerted on the box by electrically driven system. At every particular displacement, the load readings are taken, and the shearing force and the strain are calculated at failure point. For the basal sandy layer where investigation was terminated, the deformational modulus Es, = 26,020KN/m? Bearing capacity of soil layers We have considered the calculation of soil bearing capacity at specific depth interval, and the calculated results are shown in the table below. In our consideration, the proposed pile diameters of 0.610m (24inchs) and 0.762m (30inchs) with suggested pile lengths of 26m depth embedment into the subsoil was used in the calculation of pile bearing capacity, and the calculated results for single steel driven load bearing piles are shown in table below. The ultimate resistance Qa of a pile is the sum of the ultimate shaft resistance Qs and the ultimate base resistance Qb. 7.2 REMMENDATIONS The investigated bore hole and the cone penetration tests results revealed that the subsoil stratigraphy below the sea bed level to approximate depth of 14.95m is a deposit of Soft organic clay which grade into firm clay with depth, and the top clay layer from 14.95m depth is under lay by loose to medium dense sand where the investigation was terminated at 30m depth. We have considered the different soil layers from the laboratory tests results classification, and we have also consider the bearing capacity of the different soil layers, and looked at the pile performance based on the calculated single pile bearing capacity at 27m depth within the limit of the depth investigated, and we therefore recommend that the piles should be driven into the sandy layer up to 27m depth within the limit of contractual investigated depth of 30m. Engineering Nigeria Limited SEPLAT NIGERIA Geotechnical, Geology, Hydrology And Geophysical Consultant FURTHER GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPOSED SITE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF BOUY MOORING DOLPHIN AND BREAST MOORING DOLPHIN AT WRPC JETTY Issued APRIL eat Pago 25 of 29 It has been authored by professional experts that piles driven into loose to medium dense sand provide considerable compactive effect, and the capacity of individual piles in sand tends to increase as neighbouring piles are driven in a group, due to this compactive effect. In other words, driving further piles close by as in the case of the proposed construction work, will have a beneficial effect on the SHAFT CAPACITY of a pile due to vibration compaction during installation of the piles (reference: W. G. K. Fleming etal (1985), Piling Engineering pg. 99, Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New York and Toronto). We are of the opinion that the proposed construction piles should be a combination of vertical and raking pile with concrete cap structure. In this case the raking piles will serve as load bearing piles and also will be mobilized to Serve as anchor piles (BS 6349: Part 2: 1988). It is worthy to note that raking piles are subjected to lateral loads, in the case of dolphin piles, the lateral loads are generated from wave effect and the consequences of accidental vessel impact on the berthing dolphin structure, which resultant effect may cause lateral deflection of the piles. The resistance to lateral deflection of piles is the mobilized soil reaction around the piles and ‘the construction strength of the piles. We advice that adequate engineering judgement should be taken in the selection of construction materials and construction method in other to achieve high construction strength for the piles. The findings and recommendations revealed in this report ‘are based on interpretation of obtained data from field boring work / CPT testing and laboratory tests results on samples. All laboratory tests were carefully carried out with conventional practice and it is not envisaged ‘that the soil conditions in the proposed site will vary significantly from those described in this report. However, if there be any variation reported in the soil condition during construction stage, it would be necessary to evaluate the engineering significance of such variations. We hope this meet your intent purpose. Regards Report prepared by; ©. J.
