1. Steam at 7 bar and dryness fraction 0.9 expands in a cylinder behind a piston isothermally and
reversibly to a pressure of 1.5 bar. Calculate the change of internal energy and the change of
enthalpy per kg of steam. The heat supplied during the process is found to be 400 kJ/kg.
Calculate the work done per kg of steam?

2. An air-conditioning system involves the mixing of cold air and warm outdoor air before the
mixture is routed to the conditioned room in steady operation. Cold air enters the mixing
chamber at 5C and 105 kPa at a rate of 1.25 m3/s while warm air enters at 34C and 105 kPa.
The air leaves the room at 24C. The ratio of the mass flow rates of the hot to cold air streams
is 1.6. Using variable specific heats, determine (a) the mixture temperature at the inlet of the
room and (b) the rate of heat gain of the room?

3. 0.1 m3 of an ideal gas at 300 K and 1 bar is compressed adiabatically to 8bar. It is then cooled at
constant volume and further expanded isothermally so as to reach the condition from where it
started. Calculate : (i)Pressure at the end of constant volume cooling.(ii)Change in internal energy
during constant volume process. (iii)Net work done and heat transferred during the cycle. Assume
cp=14.3kJ/kg K and cv= 10.2 kJ/kg K.

4. An inventor claims to have developed an engine which delivers a net power of 450 kW when
consuming fuel of calorific value of 43000 kJ/Kg at a rate of 0.015 Kg/S combustion of the fuel
gives an upper temperature limit of 560oC and the engine rejects heat to a sink maintained an
artificially low temperature of -50oC by a refrigerator driven by the engine . the refrigerator rejects
heat at the atmospheric temperature of 33oC show whether or the inventor claims are justifiable?
