SJUS 2010

MeZeMeWe Project
Fall 2017

As the term progresses, youll compose a piece of writing in which you connect your life and your
learning, charting a path forward for yourself as you develop as a social justice activist and scholar.
In the first part of the piece, youll tell a story from your own experience, one that captures the
essence of what has drawn you to pursue social justice. In the second part, youll either (a) tell the
story of a figure from the history of social justice whose life promises to illuminate your own or (b) do
some volunteer work and tell the story of your interactions with folks there. In the third part, youll
reflect upon the connections between your own life story and the stories you encountered through
your reading or volunteer work, to draw lessons you can use to guide you forward. And, finally, in the
fourth part, youll share insights you believe we all can use.
Each part will be approximately 23 double-spaced pages long so 812 pages altogether. Youll
also create a poster about your presentation to share on our last day of class.
Please note that this isnt a research paper that requires you to find, synthesize, and report on lots of
sources. Nor is it a position paper, where your job is to argue for a side of an issue. Rather, its an
exercise in storytelling designed to give you a space to reflect upon your life and your learning and
clarify your direction going forward.
