Bioengineered Skin
Bioengineered skin growth is the future technology in which can benefit a safer
alternative to animal testing. As stated there are More than half a million animals that were test
subjects in the U.S in 1997, the most recent year for which the U.S Department of Agriculture
provides data, (Joch 1). Artificial skin was first created for burn victims and trauma care
patients but the recent developments in bio engineered skin growth have sparked other ways of
use. It is important that the U.S jumps on board with the ideas of bio engineered skin growth for
the sake of cruel animal testing. With that being said there will be more room for improvement
and a more accurate representation to human skin versus animal skin. The benefits and problems
of using artificial skin for scientific testing are that there will be a more accurate test and
ensuring the safety of animals and the problems are is there any trust that the artificial skin is
worthy.
The benefits in which artificial skin can help have a tremendous amount of upside. When
testing animals for toxicity and irritation tests there might be a different reaction to the skin
versus a human. That way Bio engineered skin can give a more accurate representation of how
the skin reacts. By the U.S integrating this method of practice they can save animals and become
more economical and efficient. According to William Stokes Bioengineered models also have
an advantage of yielding test results that are easier to reproduce from lab to lab, (Joch 2). This

data gives proof that artificial skin can be more efficient within in the labs as well which will be
The problems with artificial skin are as blunt and straight forward as they come and the
question is, is it trustworthy? That question opens other questions like is it safe and will it harm
any consumers if tests arent accurate. The problems with artificial skin is that it hasnt been
used enough for such questions in fact in some cases people might not trust it for that same
reason. Artificial skin can be risky when testing because its not human flesh and therefor how
do they know theyll get the same feedback. Versus if animal tested some people can just assume
that the product will be safe. If these questions cant be solved by the testers than their product is
in jeopardy.

Another benefit is that Artificial skin testing can be more efficient. The problems with Artificial
skin is that it may not be a trustworthy solution and could harm the consumer. Another problem
