Cool Cities Welcomes the City of Newark Newark’s Mayor and City Council voted unanimously to endorse the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement on Monday, February 22, 2010. Cool Cities are municipalities that commit to energy sustainability, environmental stewardship and climate protection by endorsing the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Cool Cities Delaware Newsletter - March 2010 Page 1 Outreach Vital for Sustainability Cool Cities Delaware’s volunteers are taking advantage of every opportunity to conduct public outreach and to raise awareness for the importance of energy sustainability, environmental stewardship and climate protection policies and programs for local governments. We recently partnered with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark with our booth and program materials at their Green Matters in the Delaware Region forum. Governor Jack Markell and DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara spoke about their vision for sustainability and environmental Cool Cities Delaware Chairman Ron Zink with stewardship in Delaware during the festivities. Lois Hoffman and DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara, an important supporter of Cool Cities. Volunteers Step Up at Organizational Meeting Cool Cities Delaware held its first organizational meeting at the Delaware City Library on February 20. Nineteen activists and interested citizens attended the meeting to discuss steps towards encouraging all local governments to adopt energy sustainability, environmental stewardship and climate protection policies and programs. Topics of most interest to those in attendance included: Cool Counties—the Sierra Club’s Cool Cities program has a sister organization that encourages counties to endorse the U.S. Counties Climate Stabilization From left to right: Harry Haon (Vice Chair, Sierra Declaration. We will begin mobilizing an effort for the Club Southern Delaware Group), Colin Manasse counties. (Center for Energy and Environmental Policy— CEEP), Nancy Carig (Delaware Sierra Club Conference for Local Governments—we are in President), Jeff Mascornick (CEEP) and Harvy planning stages of organizing a conference to facilitate Zendt (Mayors for Peace) the steps needed for local governments to improve their sustainability programs. Celebrate Earth Hour—March 27, 2010
Earth Hour is a global initiative of individuals, schools, organizations, businesses and governments who turn off their lights for one hour to cast a vote in favor of action on climate change. By voting with their light switches, Earth Hour participants send a powerful, visual message for energy sustainability and climate protection. Earth Hour is the largest climate event in history. In 2009, more than 4,000 cities in 87 countries participated, including 318 cities and 8 states in the U.S. On Saturday, March 27th 2010 at 8:30 p.m. hundreds of millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour, symbolically calling for action on climate change.
