Marathon runner to triathlete:

business planning in Antamina

Antamina has grown production from 70 to 130,000 tpd making it one of the Susan Knoerr. Compaa Minera
Antamina S.A ., Peru
top 10 copper mines in the world. A joint venture between four international
metals and mining companies Antamina operates in the highlands of Peru
with best in class production, safety, environmental and social programs.
In 2012 Antamina started up the 130,000 tpd expansion with a ramp up of
less than 3 months. Although the ramp up was extremely successful several
opportunities for improvements were identified in the design and execution.
At the same time, space within the operating site is becoming limited and
permitting requirements and social pressures are increasing.
In 2012, Antamina senior management spent dedicated time analyzing the
past and decided that improved planning was key to maintain the low cost
profile and provide the flexibility for future growth of production capacity or
mine life. The gaps that were identified included: Mine planning that only
looked at the current life of mine, impacts outside of the mine were not fully
considered, interactions between departments were not clearly defined and
projects were not advanced early enough for the permitting and engineering
studies timelines. In late 2012 a new integrated planning strategy was devel-
oped for 2013, advancing the timelines to permit more internal review and
alignment of all of the stakeholders with the new process.
In early 2013, a kickoff was held with the Senior Management Team to
launch the new process and this presentation will discuss the process used
and what we have learned throughput this process.
