Why Hybrid System
is considered for Marine Application?
- Dynamic power / torque demands, e.g. tugs with short peak power requirements and long standby period.

- Distinctly different power requirement modes, e.g. windfarm vessels to transport passages with high
speed and long low speed loitering periods.

- To allow propulsion system operate at its optimum point to achieve low fuel consumption and low
exhaust emission.

- To increase flexibility in vessel design, machinery installation and operation efficiency to extend engine TBO

- For ships operating in special environmental zones (pure electrical drive in GREEN zone etc.)
* Less noise for comfort and special operation,
* Low exhaust gas emission level to minimize environmental impact

After first installations in rail and yacht application and further improvements of power management system
and components, MTU now focus on new projects that required Hybrid system within marine applications.

To allow propulsion system can operate these modes, MTU is able to


offer following equipment for the propulsion system :-

Main diesel engines,


Gearbox incl. PTI / PTO with separate electric motor driven raw
water pump for Electric and Silent Mode operation (when no raw
water from engine to gearbox oil cooler)
Electrical motors / alternator driven by PTI / PTO
Inverter (DC-AC power inverter)
Automation system

Mode of Operation
To allow propulsion system operate at its optimum point to achieve low fuel
consumption and low exhaust emission, the following propulsion modes can be
programmed and activated :
Booster-Mode (B-Mode) Combine Diesel Engine and E Motor
Charging-Mode (C-Mode) Diesel Engine drive E Motor to charge battery
and supply electrical power to power grid onboard.
Diesel-Mode (D-Mode) Only Diesel Engine driving propeller
Electric-Mode (E-Mode) Generating set supply electrical power to E motor
Silent-Mode (S-Mode) Battery Supply Power to E Motor and Power Grid

Benefits
Emission
Significant CO2, SOX, NOX, Soot and Particles reduction due to lower
power propulsion engine and generating set can be considered.
Maneuvering in harbor or GREEN Zone without emission by energy
from battery.
Diesel engine can be replaced with Pure Gas Engine.

Maintenance
Better operating points for the main engine and auxiliary engine. This
results in longer TBO with better load profile.
Shorter operating hours for the main engine which allow operator to
extend engine TBO.
Maintenance contract with MTU.

General Description:
Preliminary Vessel Overview
The Catamaran is designed to run high speed across a bay in
Southern Australia and then a relatively low speed
manoeuvring in a river which is categorized as very
environmentally sensitive area.

Operational Modes are:


Boost mode (Engine + Gensets) operation outside river
Diesel mode (Engine only) operation in the harbor
