La Ciudad de Mxico volvi
a cimbrarse por un fuerte sis-
mo... y, una vez ms, emergi,
incondicional, la solidaridad y
heroicidad de los capitalinos.
Treinta y dos aos des-
pus del terremoto de 1985,
el Centro del Pas volvi a
colapsarse un 19 de septiem-
bre, esta vez por un sismo de
magnitud 7.1 con epicentro en
Morelos.
El saldo, hasta la media-
noche, segn Gobernacin,
era de 224 muertos, 117 de
ellos en la CDMX. El movi-
miento telrico qued regis-
trado a las 13:14 horas y se
sinti en al menos 6 estados.
En la Ciudad de Mxico,
colonias del centro y sur re-
sultaron las ms castigadas
con 45 inmuebles colapsa-
dos y cientos de viviendas
afectadas.
El Ejrcito activ el Plan

mil 400 efectivos en las en-
tidades ms afectadas.

earthquake struck Mexico on
Tuesday afternoon, toppling
buildings, killing children in a
school that collapsed, rattling the
capital and sending people flood-
ing into the streets for the second
time in just two weeks.
By night, nearly 150 people had
been reported killed across the
country, including at least 21 pu-
pils in the fallen school in Mexico
City and scores in the state of Mo-
relos, close to the epicenter of the

Jones is the civil rights pioneer al-
most no one knows. She was
Louisvilles first black prosecutor
and negotiated the first fight con-
tract for Muhammad Ali, her
neighbor. She registered thou-
sands of African-American voters
in the 1960s and paved the way for
a ban on racial discrimination by
local theaters and lunch counters.
One person who was astonished
she had never heard of Ms. Jones
was a professor named Lee Rem-
ington, who began research for a
biography four years ago. The
more Professor Remington
learned, the more she became
desperate to discover what no one
has ever learned: who was re-
sponsible for Ms. Joness death in
1965, when, at 34, she was brutally
beaten and thrown into the Ohio
River to drown.
Poring over 1,600 pages of po-
lice files, Professor Remington, a
lawyer and political scientist,
shifted from mere history to what
she calls a quest for justice. She
laid out what she believed were
overlooked clues to the killing in a
long letter last year to the Lou-
isville police, who agreed to re-
open the case. The Justice Depart-
ments civil rights division also
stepped in.
But even with renewed interest
in the case, it is unclear whether
there is any real chance 52
years after Ms. Jones died, when
witnesses are deceased and evi-
dence has vanished of finding
out who killed her and why.

The earthquake hit shortly after
1 p.m. about 100 miles from Mexico
City. It registered a preliminary
magnitude of 7.1, causing heavy

the 32nd anniversary of another
major disaster: the 1985 quake
that killed as many as 10,000 peo-
ple in Mexico.
It also came less than two
weeks after the most powerful
earthquake in Mexico in a cen-
tury, an 8.1 magnitude quake that
killed at least 90 people, destroyed
thousands of homes and was felt
by tens of millions of people.
Residents in Mexico City, hav-
ing just experienced shaking from
that quake, said the tremors on

dent Trump, in declaring Tues-
day that sovereignty should be
the guiding principle of affairs
between nations, sketched out a
radically different vision of the
world order than his forebears,
who founded the United Nations
after World War II to deal col-
lectively with problems they
believed would transcend bor-
ders.
Mr. Trump offered the General
Assembly a strikingly selective
definition of sovereignty, threat-
ening to act aggressively against
countries like North Korea, Iran
and Venezuela, whose policies he
opposes, yet saying almost noth-
ing about Russia, which seized
territory from its neighbor
Ukraine, and meddled in the
American presidential election.
But more important than how
he defined sovereignty was Mr.
Trumps adoption of the word
itself language more familiar
to small countries, guarding
themselves against the incur-
sions of larger neighbors or
defying the judgments of a global
elite, than to a superpower that
fashioned a web of global institu-
tions to enshrine its national
interests.
I will always put America
first, just like you, as the leaders
of your countries, will always
and should always put your
countries first, Mr. Trump de-
clared to a smattering of ap-
plause from an audience that
included gimlet-eyed diplomats
from some of the countries he
criticized.
Mr. Trump rooted his philoso-
phy in President Harry S. Tru-
man, the Marshall Plan and the
restoration of Europe. But the
vision he articulated was smaller
and more self-interested. Amer-
ica, he said, would no longer
enter into one-sided alliances
or agreements. It would no long-
er shoulder an unfair financial
burden in bodies like the United
Nations.
As long as I hold this office, I
will defend Americas interest
above all else, the president
declared.
It was a defiant speech, pep-
pered with threats and denuncia-

dent Trump brought the same
confrontational style of leadership
he has used at home to the worlds
most prominent stage on Tuesday
as he vowed to totally destroy
North Korea if it threatened the
United States and denounced the
nuclear agreement with Iran as
an embarrassment that he may
abandon.
In his first address to the United
Nations General Assembly, Mr.
Trump framed the conflicts as a
test of the international system.
The bombastic flourishes that
generate approving roars at poli-
tical events were met by stony si-
lence, interrupted a few times by a
smattering of applause, as Mr.
Trump promised to crush loser
terrorists, mocked North Koreas
leader as Rocket Man and de-
clared that parts of the world are
going to hell.
The presidents tone carried
real-world implications for the fu-
ture of the United Nations and the
escalating confrontations with in-
ternational outliers. In the space
of 42 minutes, he upended dec-
ades of rhetorical support by the
United States for the collective
philosophy of the United Nations
as he defended his America First
policy. He repeatedly extolled
sovereignty in a setting where
the term traditionally has been
brandished by nations like Russia,
China, Iran and North Korea to de-

into his role as president of
the Los Angeles Board of
Education, Ref Rodriguez
announced Tuesday that he
would step down from that
post to spare the school dis-
trict the distraction of a
criminal case filed against
him.
The decision marks a
stunning turnaround for
Rodriguez and supporters
of charter schools, who
spent record sums in cam-
paigns this year to elect a
board majority that is widely
viewed as pro-charter. That
new majority chose Rodri-
guez as its president in July.
Rodriguez, 46, who faces
three felony charges on alle-
gations of campaign money
laundering, said he would re-
tain his seat on the board.
That will leave the char-
ter-friendly majority intact,
though his legal problems
could detract from what the
majority has described as its
kids-first agenda.
When he was elected in
2015, Rodriguez, the co-
founder of a charter organi-
zation, was the first member
of the board to have deep
personal ties to the charter
school community.
The charges stem from
that 2015 campaign.

erful 7.1 earthquake rocked
central Mexico on Tuesday,
collapsing homes and
bridges across hundreds of
miles, killing at least 248
people and sending thou-
sands more fleeing into the
streets screaming in a coun-
try still reeling from a deadly
temblor that struck less
than two weeks ago.
Entire apartment blocks
swayed violently in the cen-
ter of Mexico City, including
in the historic districts of El
Centro and Roma, crum-
bling balconies and causing
huge cracks to appear on
building facades.
Panic spread through the
citys core; rescue vehicles
raced toward damaged build-
ings, and neighbors took on
heroic roles as rescuers.
Firefighters and police
officers scrambled to pull
survivors from a collapsed
elementary and secondary
school where children died.

Around 11 a.m., Julian
Dominguez heard alarms
sounding in the neighbor-
hood of Iztapalapa, part of a
citywide drill to mark the an-
niversary of the magnitude

kept working at his comput-

About two hours later,
Dominguez, 27, started to
feel the building move, and
alarms sounded again, he
