STEP A - Wondering at the Creator of Families

In creating man and woman, God instituted the human family and endowed it with its fundamental constitution.

Students come from a variety of family backgrounds.

The more people think about how members in families share, use their gifts to help each other, cooperate, keep
family rules and join in family celebrations.

The purpose of this lesson is to assist the development of students religious awareness. It aims to help them
understand the religious meaning of significant experiences such as family.

Students will develop an understanding that families are all different and the importance of belonging to a family.

They will consolidate their understanding of family expectations and cooperation by comparing it to their significant
experiences with those of Jesus.

Prior Knowledge

This is the introductory lesson for this RE Unit.

The students were introduced to the concept of family in Religious Education in Year Two.

In Year Two, the students explored how each person belongs to a family.
Family members:
share together (e.g. surnames, homes, food, pets, etc.)
provide for each others needs (e.g. health, love, discovering and learning, development of personal gifts, etc.)
cooperate together (e.g. sharing chores and work, helping with needs, encouraging, forgiving, etc.).

Teacher will use a check list to put a tick or cross next to a students name depending on whether or not they
correctly responded to the questions.
- Teacher will collect and mark the prayers made by students thanking God for their families and listing the
ways they can contribute to their family life.
- Teacher will use an observational record throughout the lesson to record students observations, questions,
behaviours, understanding and cooperative skills where necessary.
- Collect storyboards at the end of lesson to see the groups progress and to plan further lessons.
Lesson Objectives

1. State at least one point that describes something we like about our families verbally in group discussion.

2. Use a technical device to respond to all three questions on the app Padlet individually.

3. Construct a prayer that thanks God for families and list at least 3 ways to contribute to family life.

Timing Steps of the Lesson Resources

Introduction:
Students asked to bring in a
photo of their family
- Students will be asked to take out their family photos and
bring them down to the mat to commence the lesson.
Class prayer poster on the
- The teacher will ask students to join in saying the class wall
prayer.

- Teacher will display a collage

Collage of families

- Families come in all different shapes and sizes, some


children have two parents, some children only have a dad or
a mum, some children have lots of brothers and sisters,
some may not have any, some children may live with their
grandparents or some with foster parents.

- The students will be asked to pick up their family photograph A2 cardboard poster
and one at a time come to the front of the class and stick it Blue tac
onto a cardboard poster.

- Students will experience an opportunity to feel charitable and


accepting of different family dynamics through the viewing of
the collage of family photos in the class.

- When each student has stuck their family photograph onto


the cardboard poster the teacher will chose a student to read
out the text under Jesuss family photo. (God created a
family for his son).

- I wonder what that means?

- Teacher will ask a few students what they think the statement
means (It means Mary and Joseph were chosen by God to
be Jesuss earthly parents).

- Teacher will ask students:


- What are some of the things we like best about our families
that we are thankful for?

- They will be asked to turn to a partner to discuss the question


for 1 minute.

- Teacher will listen to students discussions and take Anecdotal Record


anecdotal notes to record their responses.

- The students will be asked to put their hand up and give their Whiteboard Marker
answers while the teacher writes their ideas on the board.

9:10am Lesson Body:

Strategies for Learning and Teaching:

- Students will be asked to find a comfortable spot on the mat


where they can see.

- The teacher will explain to students that they will read a book Piggybook by Anthony
called Piggybook by Anthony Browne. Browne

- Teacher will ask students to return to their desk and turn on Ipad
their ipad to a program called Padlet. Padlet

- The students will answer a series of wonder questions that


the teacher has pre-set.

- Teacher is able to see students responses which they can


use to assess their understanding of the book and the
religious concepts.

- Wonder questions:

- I wonder why Mr Piggott and his sons started to help out in


the end.

- I wonder how Mrs Piggott felt when she was the only one
contributing to the family at the start.

- What rules may have been helpful in this family?

- How can you contribute to your family in a loving and giving


way?

- Students will be able to see other students responses to the


questions.

- The teacher will then put students into pre-determined


groups and provide the following instructions.
- In your groups you are to create a picture book that shows
the contrast between how you contribute to your family and
how Jesus would have contributed to his family. For example
on one page you might draw a picture of yourself vacuuming
your bedroom and on the other page you might draw Jesus
sweeping out the barn.

- Before creating the picture book groups will be given a Storyboards


storyboard that they can use to plan out their ideas.

- They must include a sentence under each picture that states


how the task contributes to the family.

- Students will be given time in the following lessons to


complete their storyboards, create their picture book and
present it to the class.

- The teacher will collect the storyboards after students have


written their names on the back.

Lesson Closure:

- Students will be asked to return to their desks and take out


their religion books. Religion books

- Teacher will ask students to write a prayer that thanks God


for their families and list ways they can contribute to family Prayer
life which will be assessed.

- The teacher will read the following prayer to conclude the


lesson.

A Prayer for Family

Heavenly Father, Please shine your light upon my family. Give us


strength to overcome all of the difficulties that we are dealing with
now and protect us against any and all problems we may encounter
in the future. O Lord, please bring us together as we are meant to be.
May the love that binds us only grow stronger as we fulfil the destiny
you have laid out for us.
