Impact on Services
The switch will restart during the upgrade and service will be interrupted.
NOTE
The service interruption time depends on many factors, such as the system software size, upgrade
method, operator's skill, and service configurations. The following service interruption time is for your
reference.
In the following examples, the switches are not configured and they are not in any stack. In
addition, all these switches can provide the PoE function.
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the serial interface, the service interruption time is as follows (the baudrate is
115200):
z S2700: 30 minutes
z S3700: 37 minutes
z S5700: 44 minutes
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the network port (FTP mode), the service interruption time is as follows:
If the switches are upgraded by using the command line, the service interruption time is as
follows:
z S2700: 3 minutes
z S3700: 3 minutes
z S5700: 3 minutes
z The flash memory of the S3728/S3752/S2752 can store only one startup file; therefore,
delete the current startup file before performing the upgrade. (If there are remaining files
in the flash memory, delete them.)
z When you upgrade the software using the command line, stack upgrade, or USB flash
drive, do not copy or delete files.
z After the version is upgraded, ensure that the configuration is saved because a later
version is compatible with early versions but an early version is incompatible with later
versions. If the configuration is not saved, the configuration will be lost in the case of
version rollback.
z If the loopback local swap-mac or loopback remote swap-mac command has been
used on an interface in V100R006 to configure MAC swap loopback, run the start
command in the interface view after the upgrade; otherwise, the MAC swap loopback
configuration will be invalid.
z After the arp learning dhcp-trigger command is used on a VLANIF interface of the
DHCP relay agent in V100R006, dynamic ARP entries are generated only after DHCP
snooping in the corresponding VLAN or on the physical interface connected to users.

NOTE
In the following chapters, the version is upgraded to V100R006C00SPC800.
In the following sections, the S2700 is used as an example to describe the upgrade.
The general requirements for setting up an environment for upgrading the system using TFTP
or FTP are as follows:
z You can log in to the switch from a PC through the serial interface or Telnet.
z The server and the switch can communicate with each other.
z Files for the upgrade are stored in the server.
Figure 3-1 Network diagram of upgrading the system using TFTP or FTP
The general requirements for setting up an environment for upgrading the system using
Xmodem are as follows:
z The RS-232 serial interface on the PC and the console interface on the switch are
connected through a console cable.
z Files for the upgrade are stored on the PC.
The preceding information shows that there is 2,266 KB space. If there is enough space,
ignore step 2.
<Quidway> dir
Directory of flash:/
Before upgrading an S2752 or S3700 to V100R006, delete the current startup file to free up
the flash memory space.
If no system software is stored on the device, do not restart or power cycle the device during
the upgrade. Otherwise, the system may break down. If the device is powered off
unexpectedly during the upgrade, use the BootROM to upgrade the device. If the upgrade
using BootROM fails, contact Huawei engineers.
3. Run the delete command to delete unnecessary files to ensure there is enough space for
storing relevant upgrade files. Before deleting the unnecessary files, ensure that the files are
backed up or are unwanted. The following is an example of deleting the s-s2700.cc file. For
details, see "Managing the File System" in the Quidway S2700/S3700/S5700/S6700 Series
Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide Basic Configurations.
After you run the delete /unreserved command to delete a file from the flash, the file cannot
be restored; therefore, run this command with caution, and a file backup is recommended.
----End
z Before the S2752/S3700 is upgraded, you must delete the original startup file. For details on how to
delete the original startup file, see section 3.7 Checking the Flash Memory Space.
z The methods of upgrading the system software using command line are similar on the S2700, S3700,
S5700, and the S6700. In the following description, the system software of the S2700 is upgraded.
z The S5700/S6700 has a dedicated management interface, namely, MEth. The MEth interface can be
used as the Layer 3 interface.
z Before the upgrade, use the terminal monitor command to enable the terminal to display logs, traps,
and debugging information sent from the information center.
You can use any of the following methods to load the system software:
No TFTP client software is installed on the S2700; therefore, the customer needs to buy TFTP client
software and install it. The TFTP32 program is recommended.
Run the TFTP server program on the PC and configure the PC:
z Click Browse to set the directory for storing the new system software.
z The TFTP server address in Server interface is automatically set by the system, for
example, 10.164.30.29. However, if the IP address is incorrect you can manually change
it.
Do not stop the TFTP server program when you are backing up data.
2. Back up the system software, configuration file, and patch files to the TFTP server.
Before the backup, check the size of the configuration file. After the backup, compare the size
of the original file with the size of the backup file. Ensure that the two files are the same size.

The methods for upgrading the system software using the BootROM are similar on the S2700, S3700,
S5700 and the S6700. Here, the method for upgrading the system software on the S2700 is taken as an
example.
Impact Services are interrupted during the upgrade and the device reboot.
Time The upgrade takes about 100 seconds when the transmission rate of the
Required serial interface is 115200 bit/s.
Prerequisites After backing up the key data in the flash memory, you must run the
reboot command in the user view to restart the system.
Do not restart or power off the S2700 when the information "Update BOOTROM system"
is being displayed during the upgrade of the BootROM. Otherwise, the S2700 runs
abnormally. In this case, contact Huawei technical personnel.
You can restart or power off the S2700 only when the message "done!" is displayed.
The BootROM menu varies according to the version. Here, the BootROM of
V100R006C00SPC800 is taken as an example.
1. Use a serial cable to connect the serial interfaces on the PC and the S2700 and start the
HyperTerminal on the PC.
4. On the COM Properties page, click Restore Defaults. Then set the value of Bits per second
to 9600 and click OK.
Before entering the BootROM menu, you need to restart the S2700. During the restart of the
S2700, the following information is displayed:
Press Ctrl+B to enter BOOTROM menu... 1
Press Ctrl+B before the countdown timer expires, and then enter the password. The default
password is huawei or www.huawei.com. Then the advanced BootROM menu is displayed.
The following information is displayed:
BOOTROM MENU
Changing the transmission rate of the serial interface causes interruption of the
communication between the PC and S2700. To restore the communication between the PC
and the S2700, you must set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC the same as
that of the serial interface on the S2700.
Select the transmission rate for the serial interface as required. The transmission rate is
expressed in bit/s. The default transmission rate of the serial interface on the S2700 is 9600
bit/s. A greater value you enter represents a higher transmission rate of the serial interface. It
is recommended that you enter 5: 115200.
If you change the transmission rate of the serial interface on the S2700, set the transmission
rate of the serial interface on the PC the same as that of the serial interface on the S2700. In
this manner, you can restore the communication between the PC and the S2700.
For example, after you select 5: 115200, the following information is displayed:
BaudRate is 115200 bps. Please change the terminal's speed to 115200 bps
In this case, you need to perform the following settings on the HyperTerminal of the PC to
restore the communication between the PC and the S2700:
The BootROMs for products of various series are incompatible with each other. For example,
the BootROM of the S2700 cannot be used to upgrade the BootROM of the S3700; the
BootROM of the S3700 cannot be used to upgrade the BootROM of the S2700.
Choose Transfer > Send File. The Send File dialog box is displayed.
Click Browse. Then select the bootrom128.bin file for upgrading the BootROM.
Select XMODEM from the Protocol drop-down list box. Click Send to start sending the file.
Then, the S2700 automatically upgrades the BootROM by using the upgrade file. After the
upgrade, the S2700 automatically returns to the BootROM menu.
10. After the BootROM is upgraded, restore the default rates of the serial interface and the
HyperTerminal, and then reestablish the connection.
Select 4. Return to main menu in the BootROM menu to return to the BootROM menu, and
then select 7. Reboot to reboot the BootROM.
----End
Impact Services are interrupted during the system software uploading and the
device reboot.
Time Required The software uploading time depends on many factors, such as the
system software size, transmission rate on the serial interface, and
operator's skill. When the transmission rate of the serial interface is
115200 bit/s, the uploading time is about 30 minutes.
Prerequisites z The matched BootROM is upgraded.
z The flash memory has enough space to store the system software.
Press Ctrl+B before the countdown timer expires, and then enter the password. The default
password is huawei. Then the advanced BootROM menu is displayed. The following
information is displayed:

Select the transmission rate for the serial interface as required. The transmission rate is
expressed in bit/s. The default transmission rate of the serial interface on the S2700 is 9600
bit/s. A greater value you enter represents a higher transmission rate of the serial interface. It
is recommended that you enter 5. 115200. If you change the transmission rate of the serial
interface on the S2700, set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC the same as
that of the serial interface on the S2700. In this manner, you can restore the communication
between the PC and the S2700.
For example, after you select 5: 115200, the following information is displayed:
BaudRate is 115200 bps. Please change the terminal's speed to 115200 bps
In this case, you need to perform the following settings on the HyperTerminal of the PC to
restore the communication between the PC and the S2700:
Select 2. Download file to Flash through serial interface in the serial interface submenu,
and the following information is displayed:
Choose Transfer > Send File. The Send File dialog box is displayed.
Click Browse to select the upgrade file of the system software. Then select Xmodem from the
Protocol drop-down list box. Click Send to start sending the file.
After transferring the upgrade file, the system prompts you whether to change the file name. If
no, save it with the default file name. The default file name is not the uploaded file name. The
system software name in the flash memory or the default file name hw-switch.cc is used.
Generally, it is recommended that the file name be changed.
Only the files with the file name extension .cc can be used as the upgrade files of the system software on
the S2700.
If the file S2700-V100R006C00SPC800.CC has already been saved in the flash memory, the
system prompts you whether to overwrite the existing file with the new one. The following
information is displayed:

4.3.1 Overview
If you do not have a PC in the on-site deployment, use the USB flash drive in which the
system software and configuration file are stored. The software commissioning engineer is not
required.
Only the S5700-SI and S6700 can be upgraded using the USB flash drive. Stacks do not support this
upgrade method.
a. Copy files.
When the S5700-SI is started successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at
0.5 Hz), the USB flash drive can be inserted to load files. The S5700-SI automatically
downloads the system software and configuration file according to the index file in the
USB flash drive.
b. Restart the switch.
The S5700-SI sets the system software and configuration file for next startup, and then
restarts automatically.
c. Verify the loading of files.
After restarting successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at 0.5 Hz), the
S5700-SI begins to verify the loaded files. When the SYS indicator is in orange and
blinks at 0.5 Hz, the upgrade is finished.
z USB port: The S5700-SI provide USB 1.1; the S6700 provide USB 2.0.
z USB flash drive:
The USB flash drive delivered with Huawei switch is recommended because this USB
flash drive is compatible with the switch. The USB flash drive must be paid
independently. If you have not bought the USB flash drive, contact local Huawei office.
The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 format; otherwise, set the format to FAT32
before using it.
The space in the USB flash drive must be sufficient for the system software and
configuration file.
2. Prepare system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file.
z The first line in the index file must be the SN to prevent repeated copy. The SN consists of creation
date + time, for example, <sn=201105091219;/>. Before copying a file, the device compares the SNs.
If the SN of a file to be copied already exists, the device does not copy the file. After the file is
copied, the device stores the SN. The index files without SNs are considered invalid, and the device
will stop copying the files.
z If an index file contains the following three formats, the device uses the information in format (2). If
the required information is not obtained, the device uses the information in format (3) and then
format (1). When only one USB flash drive is used in the upgrade, the values of mac=, esn=, and
boardtype= are default. When the device obtains the value default, the device starts to copy the file
without comparing it with other files.
z When editing an index file, press Enter when a line is finished. After editing the file, save it.
z Select the upgrade files, including system software, configuration file, Web file, and patch file as
required.
z The upgrade procedures for S5700-SI, and S6700 are the same.
(1) To upgrade the same system software, configuration file, Web file, and patch file on
multiple devices, fill in the file in the format <boardtype=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=;
webfile=; patchfile=;/>.
To obtain the value of boardtype, view device labels or run the display version
command. boardtype=default indicates that all devices will be upgraded.
Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
Fill in the version number behind vrpfile=.
Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
Fill in the web file name behind webfile=.
Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
The following two formats are used for upgrading a single device:
View the device's MAC address on the chassis and fill in the MAC address behind
mac= in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
Fill in the version number behind vrpfile=.
Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
Fill in the web file name behind webfile=.
Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
View the device's ESN and fill in the ESN behind esn=.
Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
Fill in the version number behind vrpfile=.
Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
Fill in the web file name behind webfile=.
Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
If a keyword is not found or matched, the value of this item is considered to be empty.
If the version number behind vrpver= is the same as the current version, the device will not
restart.
4. Copy the index file, system software, configuration file, Web file, and patch file to the root
directory of the USB flash drive.
The index files must be stored to the root directory on the USB flash drive; the other files are stored in
the corresponding directories.
z Do not power off the switch during file copy; otherwise, the upgrade fails or the switch
cannot start.
z Do not remove the USB flash drive before the upgrade is finished; otherwise, the USB
flash drive may be damaged.
Procedure
1. Power on the S5700-SI, and wait until the system completes the startup (you are advertised to
wait for two minutes).
2. Confirm that the system is operating stably (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks every
two seconds). If the system operating is unstable, wait or solve the issue.
z If the SYS indicator is on and in green or orange, the system startup is not finished. Wait
until the system starts successfully.
z If the SYS indicator is on and in red, the system is started but an error occurs. Fix the
problem before the next step. Check whether the power supply and the fan function
properly. If no, power off the S5700-SI, and then restart the S5700-SI. If the fault persists
(the indicator is on and in red), contact Huawei technical support personnel.
z If the SYS indicator is in green and blinks more than twice every second, the system is
copying the system software and configuration file from the USB flash drive.
z After copying the files, the system restarts.
z If the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks every two seconds after the restart, the
upgrade is successful. Now you can remove the USB flash drive.
If the SYS indicator is on or blinks in red, or blinks and is in read, an error occurs. Power off
the S5700-SI and power on it, and then insert the USB flash drive again. If the upgrade fails
three times, check whether the index file on the USB flash drive is correct, or contact the
Huawei technical support personnel.
NOTE
When using the USB flash drive for upgrade, change the SN in the USB flash drive.
----End
z The methods of for upgrading the system software of the S3700, S5700 and the S6700 using the
command line interface are similar. Here, the S3700 is used as an example.
z The section describes only how to download the system software by using the S3700 as the FTP
server. For other methods of loading the system software, see the Quidway S3700/S5700/S6700
Series Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide - Basic Configurations.
z The S5700/S6700 provides a management interface MEth. You can use this interface as a Layer 3
interface.
z To retain the roles of the master and slave devices after the upgrade, set priority of the master switch
to be the highest in the stack before the upgrade.
When an S3700 is upgraded to V100R006C00SPC800, you must delete the startup file
because the flash memory space is limited.

5.2.1 Overview
Intelligent upgrade is a function that automatically upgrades or rolls back the system software
of a new member switch to the version of the master switch.
A stack system is established only when all the following requirements are met:
z All the member switches use the same software version. If the master switch detects a
different software version on the new member switch, it upgrades or rolls back the
software of the new member switch to the version of the stack.
The S3752 supports a maximum of eight switches in a stack system. The other S3700 models and the
S5700 support up to nine switches in a stack system.
The S3752 and S3728 cannot be added to the same stack system.
z All the member switches belong to the same series. That is, the EI series and SI series
cannot form a stack.
z All the member switches are connected by using stack cables and stack modules.
z All the member switches are working properly.
z The stacking function is enabled on all the member switches.
The stack processes version upgrade and rollback for new member switches in the same way.
z The new member switch and the current stack members belong to the same series.
z The new member switch is connected to other member switches by using stack cables
and stack modules.
z The stacking function is enabled on the new member switch. (This function is enabled by
default.)
z If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space to store the
startup software package, the switch automatically deletes a software package to free up
the space. If the switch is an S5700, it deletes a non-startup software package. If the switch
is an S3700, it deletes the current startup software package. If the available space in the
flash memory is still insufficient for the upgrade software, the switch restarts repeatedly. In
this case, upgrade the software of the switch to the version of the stack system manually,
and then add the switch to the stack. For the upgrade procedure, see chapter 4 Upgrade
Operations on a Single Switch.
z During the upgrade, ensure that the stack cables are functioning properly. If the upgrade of
a switch fails, upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack
manually, and then add the switch to the stack.
Upgrade Process
Start the new member switch.
The master switch of the stack automatically upgrades the new switch. If the upgrade is
successful, the following information will be displayed:
If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space for the upgrade
software, the following information is displayed:
