A.5 Method of Testing

Correct function is proven for a complete transmission path taken as a whole, i.e. from the beginning of a
particular channel to the end of that channel. The functionality is proven by measurement and recorded
in the commissioning report.

Data channel performance is assessed by measuring the actual bit error rate and comparing this with the
pseudo random test pattern. For AF-channels, level measurements are taken. In the case of telephony
channels, the signalling function is also checked.

Transit stations in a meshed network will only be tested as part of the faultfinding procedure or for the
avoidance of faults. Tests of this nature will not be recorded. When a complete channel passes through
links, for which ABB is not responsible, correct functioning will only be proven and recorded for those
portions that do lie within ABBs responsibility.

In order to allow all measurements to be carried out locally, test signals have to be looped back via the
return channel in the far end station as far as this is possible. In many cases a temporary remote loop
can be established using UCST. This is the preferred method for reasons of efficiency. However, it is
only allowed, if the interfaces and wiring of the remote station will be tested in a further step. In the
exceptional case when no return path is available, measurements must be taken in the remote station
using the appropriate instruments (point - point measurement).
Page

ABB Saudi Arabia Ltd E 5 / 46

Commissioning Report Equipment No:

As a general rule it is not permitted (for operational reasons) to set up a remote loop using UCST, if:
- the commissioning tests are being carried out on an extension to existing equipment or
- the channel passes through existing, operational channel bundles.

Before the end to end measurement is performed over the whole transmission path, the network has to
be commissioned link by link. It should be noted however, that this step of the test instruction is meant as
preparation for the final measurement over the complete path and as such is not to be recorded.

The cross-connect-functions have to be checked as far as possible during the end to end
measurements. For electrical transit connections at the 2 Mbit/s level, the signal has to be checked at, or
respectively fed into the associated time slot.

A.6 Scope of Test

During commissioning, the channels are checked at the connection terminals included in the scope of
delivery. As a rule the tests are performed from MDF to MDF (isolating terminals).

Basically, all external interfaces have to be proven according to the specifications given in this
commissioning instruction, whereby the following tests will be carried out:

Inspection of the installation

System tests including ECC, Synchronization and 1+1 operation
Control and power units
Transmission interfaces
Access interfaces
Final tests, Report Supplies

A.7 Commissioning Report

A detailed commissioning report is delivered on customer request only. Otherwise the commissioning
engineer produces only a test certificate, that confirms summarily the successful commissioning. Minor
configuration changes may be made during the commissioning. The commissioning report respectively
the test certificate is written in English.

B System Tests

B.1 ECC Test

Test if a connection between the FOX-515s in the Network can be established via the F- interface of the
COBU<X> card. If there is any other interface enabled, also the access to each network element from
this interface has to be checked.

Check: All programmed ECCs in up status

B.2 Synchronization Tests

Check that no synchronization related alarms are present. Simulate a number of failures in the
synchronization system such as:

Failure of external synchronization source (e.g. PRC)

Fiber breaks / optical card failures

The test connection should recover to error free operation. A short traffic hit during resynchronization is
possible and allowed.

Check: Synchronization system recovers according to the designed synchronization scheme.

B.3 1 + 1 operation, Switch over on loss of one path

In the case that traffic redundancy is configured, this operating mode has to be checked where possible.
For this purpose, the active transmission path is interrupted and a check is made to see if the test signal
reaches the receiver side via the secondary path.
The path switch over is checked during the end to end checks of one of the communication channels,
according to 0 E Access Modules.

Check: End to end test on the main path, secondary path interrupted
End to end test on the secondary path, main path interrupted

G Final checks

G.1 Boot process

Switch off and on the power. Check the correct operation after the system reboot. No additional alarms
should be active (except "real time lost" alarm).

G.2 Alarms
All alarm LEDs are off or listed in the commissioning report.

G.3 UCST Alarms

Check the alarm status. Depending on the condition of the installation of the FOX 515/512 network and
the attached terminal equipments, it is possible that interface modules show alarms if no DTEs are
connected. These alarms are allowed because they will disappear on site once the DTEs will be
connected. There may also be synchronization alarms on the control unit in the absence of external
clock sources.

G.4 UCST Configuration Data

Save the final configuration on a storage device and hand it over to the customer.

G.5 Spare Parts

Check that spare parts are available according to the project documentation.
