A. Introduction
A.1 Scope
This instruction covers the FOX 515/512 family of PDH/SDH multiplexers. Commissioning instructions
are common for the whole product familiy.
A.2.1.1 Identification
As all units with optical interfaces comply with the requirements for a CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT,
EN60825 has no requirement for warning labels to be displayed on this equipment.
Fore more powerful lasers, both the laser radiation and a warning label are required to be displayed on
the equipment.
The following yellow explanatory label may be fixed to the equipment to define the laser classification:
Page
CAUTION
Optical connectors
Clean all optical connectors by an approved method before making any
optical connection.
When making an optical connection, do not rotate the optical connector
unnecessarily.
When not connected, fit all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps.
CAUTION
Damage to optical fibres
When dressing fibres, take care not to exceed the minimum bend radius
(typically 35 mm) and do not overtighten tyraps used for dressing as damage
may result.
WARNING
Danger from glass chips
If there is any suspicion of a glass chip in the eye, seek medical attention at
once.
WARNING
Optical safety - automatic laser shutdown (ALS) mechanism
The optical units contain link options for disabling the automatic laser
shutdown mechanism for test purposes. In normal operation, ensure that the
laser shutdown mechanism is enabled.
WARNING
Energy hazard
The 48 V d.c. supply or any voltage converter can deliver high currents.
Thr DC supply can deliver high currents. Remove all rings, watches and other
metal jewellery before removing cover. Do not bridge connections with tools,
Page
etc.
WARNING
Risk of personal injury
Cabinets or equipments, which are not secured, may tip forwards when
handled. Do not open the hinged frame or racks without precautions. Due to
the weight of the subrack, the mounting of the subrack in the rack requires
two installers for safe working.
The system test is done in a room qualified for handling with electronic equipment. The room
temperature should be within the range of 20...35C . The ESD protection rules have to be obeyed.

Data channel performance is assessed by measuring the actual bit error rate and comparing this with the
pseudo random test pattern. For AF-channels, level measurements are taken. In the case of telephony
channels, the signalling function is also checked.
Transit stations in a meshed network will only be tested as part of the faultfinding procedure or for the
avoidance of faults. Tests of this nature will not be recorded. When a complete channel passes through
links, for which ABB is not responsible, correct functioning will only be proven and recorded for those
portions that do lie within ABBs responsibility.
In order to allow all measurements to be carried out locally, test signals have to be looped back via the
return channel in the far end station as far as this is possible. In many cases a temporary remote loop
can be established using UCST. This is the preferred method for reasons of efficiency. However, it is
only allowed, if the interfaces and wiring of the remote station will be tested in a further step. In the
exceptional case when no return path is available, measurements must be taken in the remote station
using the appropriate instruments (point - point measurement).
Page
As a general rule it is not permitted (for operational reasons) to set up a remote loop using UCST, if:
- the commissioning tests are being carried out on an extension to existing equipment or
- the channel passes through existing, operational channel bundles.
Before the end to end measurement is performed over the whole transmission path, the network has to
be commissioned link by link. It should be noted however, that this step of the test instruction is meant as
preparation for the final measurement over the complete path and as such is not to be recorded.
The cross-connect-functions have to be checked as far as possible during the end to end
measurements. For electrical transit connections at the 2 Mbit/s level, the signal has to be checked at, or
respectively fed into the associated time slot.
Basically, all external interfaces have to be proven according to the specifications given in this
commissioning instruction, whereby the following tests will be carried out:
Page
B System Tests
The test connection should recover to error free operation. A short traffic hit during resynchronization is
possible and allowed.
Check: End to end test on the main path, secondary path interrupted
End to end test on the secondary path, main path interrupted
Page
This test can be only performed in case of a redundant configuration of the power supply.
Remove one of the redundant power supplies at a time.
C.1.2 COBU<X>
1) Connect the RS-232 cable with the F-interface of the COBUx and the other end directly to the
serial interface of the PC running the UCST.
2) Open the UCST installed on the PC.
3) Select the user class and put password for the selected uses class.
4) After the login go to File and select partial download,
* Partial download successful, that means successful login.
* Partial download fail, that means fail login.
Bring the System in a status without any alarm. Eventually some alarms have to be disabled.
According to the programming, check the urgent and the non-urgent alarm relay outputs, i.e. remove a
transmit path to get a non-urgent alarm or remove a receive path to get an urgent alarm.
Check: Relay outputs with an Ohm meter and the LED on the alarm terminal Block.
Check: Alarm indication in the UCST fault network element window and the LEDs.
Page
For NEs configured with a redundant control unit, the following checks have to be performed:
Establish the connection to the NE with the corresponding configuration file loaded in UCST.
Select the control unit status/maintenance mask in UCST and click on the Update Redundant COBUx
button.

D Transmission Modules
D.1 General
The correct operation of the transmission channels is checked with the access interfaces. Therefore, for
the optical transmission modules only functional checks are performed.
Page
D.3.1.1 General
Communication channel check can be made at 2 Mbit/s level for through connections or for individual 64
kbit/s channels if external equipment is involved: e.g. 2 Mbit/s termination of a PAX or through
connection to a non-FOX 515/512/FOX-U link.
Provisionally enabled 2 Mbit/s port (for later extension of a link) also have to be checked.
D.4.1 General
With xDSL unit, checks are carried out at interface level with the corresponding partner station.
The following tests are common for all xDSL modules:
Page
E Access Modules
E.1 General
The operation check has only to be carried out on enabled subunits according to the project
documentation.
Connect the inputs SZ21/SZ22 (M/M') of the signaling channel at the far end to GND
Check the outputs SZ11/SZ12 (E/E') at the DUT.
Instead of performing the simple end to end test of the signaling channels, dedicated signaling test
equipment may be used. It is allowed to carry out a signaling function test by establishing a loop at the
remote interface end, as in the case of data or protection channels.
Appropriate test equipment can be used to perform this operation check instead of the telephone
exchange and the subscriber set.
Page
Appropriate test equipment can be used to perform this operation check instead of the telephone
exchange and the subscriber set.
Check: Ringing voltage at subscriber unit side 66...70 VAC (25 Hz)
Remark: If the test set and the NE are not synchronized from the same clock source
(plesiochronous operation), an octet slip will occur every 5...10 s. This is acceptable and
does not constitute a fault.

for each enabled subunit. With asynchronous data channels take care of the right data format.
E.3.3 LAWA 4
E.4.1.1 Teleprotection
If according to the project documentation any trip application includes Command Alarm Signals or
Command Acknowledge Signals that are configured to an auxiliary relay, command or binary signal
output, then the correct operation of these signals has to be checked, too.
Connect one Protection Signal Simulator to every TEBIT involved in the application that is checked
Connect one Binary Signal Simulator to every TEBIT that has Command Alarm Signals or Command
Acknowledge Signals configured to a binary signal output
Page
Set the TEBIT parameter Nominal Input Voltage in the Teleprotection Commands: Input Settings to 24 V for
every command involved.
Set and reset the commands on the Protection Signal Simulator for every protection application and observe
the reaction on the other Protection Signal Simulators involved.
Important: When checking the operation of protection applications that have the Cmd Duration
Monitoring parameter enabled in the Teleprotection Commands: Input Settings, pay
attention that all commands set for more than 5 seconds will be cut off.
Check: Correct trip transmission for all protection applications according
to project documentation
Check: Correct trip acknowledges signal output according to project documentation
Interrupt the trip transmission path and observe the reaction of the Command Alarm Signal output on
Protection Signal Simulator or on the Binary Signal Simulator depending on the configuration.
Check: Correct command alarm output signal for all protection applications according
to project documentation
Reset the TEBIT parameter Nominal Input Voltage in the Teleprotection Commands: Input Settings to the
voltage specified by the project documentation for all the commands involved.
Important: The Testbox MK11 does not provide all voltages for the configurable Nominal Input
Voltage parameter in the Teleprotection Commands: Input Settings. Alternatively, the
following voltages of the Testbox MK11 can be used:
48 V for Nominal Input Voltage 24, 48, 60 V
100 V for Nominal Input Voltage 110, 125 V
220 V for Nominal Input Voltage 220, 250 V
1
The given trip transfer time refers to a single NE TEBIT <-> TEBIT point to point connection. If the trip command travels
through intermediate NEs the following additional propagation delay time must be added:
Speed optimized: about 1.5 ms per through connection (TEBIT command cross connect)
Security optimized: about 2.5 ms per through connection (TEBIT command cross connect)
Page
Channel Addressing
Since wrong address configuration would result in commands not being transmitted, the check for
correct channel addressing is reduced to verification if addressing has been configured in UCST.
Establish the connection to the NE with the corresponding configuration file loaded in UCST.
Select the TEBIT traffic parameter mask in UCST and check the addresses in Teleprotection Command
Parameters.
Connect one Binary Signal Simulator to every TEBIT involved in the application that is checked
Set and reset the binary signals on the Binary Signal Simulator for every application and observe the reaction
on the other Binary Signal Simulators involved.
Page
If applicable (see also 0), connect the appropriate source and load impedance to the communication channel
interface
Apply an analogue signal with f = 1020 Hz and level according to the specification in the project documentation
to the far end of the communication channel
Connect an appropriate level meter at the DUT side of the communication channel
Connect the ISDN telephone exchange and the ISDN telephone subscriber set to the corresponding interface
unit.
Establish a call.
Check: Connection OK
Appropriate test equipment can be used to perform this operation check instead of the telephone
exchange and the subscriber set.

F.1.1.5 V.35
Applicable for: DATAS, DATA5, DATA3, DATAV
For point to multipoint operation with several stations the correct operation has to be tested as follows:
Apply a pseudo random test pattern according to the corresponding interface in the point-to-point checks (see
0) to the main station.
Step by step, loop back the communication channel at the far end of each subsequent station.
For a data partyline with several stations the correct operation has to be tested as follows:
