Foreword
One thing that I'vealways wanted to see more support for in the 3.5 OGL, and, byextension, in
Pathfinder, was factions and organizations. It's true that belonging to an organization, having a place in
the world, and dewloping roots and ties to the people and places in the game, aren't really what the
"sword and sorcery" genre is really about. But roleplaying hascomea long way from ye olden days, and
most players these days expect more from their gaming than wandering blindly down endless, featureless
corridors full of monsters that are there for no reason. Theywant games full of high fantasy, or roIIldntic
fantasy, where the world they adventure in is more than just a cardboard cut-out background. Theywant
a cdIIlpaign setting they can have an impact on, in more ways than simply slaying hordes of dragons and
witches and minotaurs.

This book is an effort on our part to bring a little more support to that kind of play. By creating rules
and guidelines for organizations, guilds, and factions, wecan provide players and GMsalike not onlywith
a fair and balanced system of rewards and obligations for such organizations, but those rules and guide-
lines can also seJ"\/t' to spawn adventure ideas, character concepts, and all sorts of other things that fuel a
game.

The rules governing the Blackshire Mercenary Company are not completely new. They are drawn
from a number of other sources, melded together, and then given oUl" own unique twist. We have
adjusted and added to these rules, and, in my opinion at least, improved on them and made them more
rich, interesting, and organic. In a similar vein, the book also includes infonnation for players whowish
to hire mercenaries from the Blackshire Mercenary Company, allowing that organization to have a place
in yOUl" game even if your players are not, themselves, members.

But of course, not everyone will be interested in a "Fighter's Guild" faction. Wizards, rogues, and
derics, for example, may be feeling left out. Though it's true that these characters arealso welcome in the
Blackshire Mercenary Company, I would be lying if I tried to pretend it wasn't really intended for
fighters. The fact that you own this book me.ms that you probably are interested in the Blackshire
mercenaries, but on the off-chance that you aren't, rest assured: OUl" intention is for this book to be the
first in an ongoing series, each of which will deal with a new faction, guild, or other organization. Some
will expand the rules governing organizations in new directions, as the guild or faction in question's
special needs require. Necrom.Jncers ofrhe Nonh""-esl PresenlS: The Blackshire Mercenary Company is
merely the beginning, but I think that we definitely started off on the right foot.

Rolando is as handsome as he is deadly, with

a strong, youthful face and rippling muscles. He is

Forall his fame and success, Rolando still

seems to be an agreeable person, and reports
from those who've personally met him say that he

most of his time travelling from one grand

surprisingly few people really know him all that

As far as his past, there are many popular

rumors, ranging from him being the rightful heir
toa stolen throne, to a humble peasant's son who
rose up through the ranks of society through hard
work, determination, and a pure heart, as well as
nearly every conceivable story in between. Some
~n claim that he is the product of a union
between the god ofstrength and the goddess of
beauty (exactly which god and goddess of those
things is an item of endless debate), but that his
divinity was taken from him by another jealous
god.

What is known is that Rolando has done

great things for the Blackshire Mercenary
Company, as he is almost universally beloved, and
serves as a great distraction from any scandals
that may arise due to corruption or misdeeds on
the part of the company. In between his
excursions to remote regions of the world to slay
unkillable monsters, conquer unconquerable
obstacles, and win inunortal glory, they
occasionally have him tour through regions where
the company's name isn't as strong as theywould
