Re:SpringServiceLifeandReadingRange
The uncorrected gravity reading is obtained from equation (A.4). The gravity reading
range hashigh andlow end, therange of whichis guaranteed to be 7000 mGal, butis
normallymuchlarger.ThelowendofthegravitymeasurementrangeoftheCG3maybe
calculatedbyinsertingvalue(SF/SC)=0.1intotheequation(A.4)
SUmin=0.1*GCAL1+0.01*GCAL2
The average value of SUmin is about 600 mGal. Depending on the values GCAL1 and
GCAL2 this value may differ somewhat for your meter. It is recommended that you
calculatethisvalueforyourmeter,becausethegravityreadingsofthelowervaluesthan
SUmin,maynotbeaccurate.
The high end of the gravity measurement range may be calculated by inserting value
(SF/SC)=1.457intotheequation(A.4)
Sumax=1.457*GCAL1+2.123*GCAL2
The average value of SU. about is 8800 mGal. Depending on the values GCAL1 and
GCAL2 this value may differ somewhat for your meter. It is recommended that you
calculatethisvalueforyourmeter,becausethegravityreadingsofthehighervaluethan
Smax maynotbeaccurate.
BecauseofthepositivedriftrateoftheCG3gravitysensor,theuncorrectedgravity

Atypicalsensorwiththedriftrateof0.5mGal/daywillreachthehighendofthe

Youmayestimatetheremainingservicelifeofyourmeterinthefollowingway:
a) CalculatethevalueSUmax foryourmeter.
b) Obtainthegravityreadingatyourlocation.
c) Ifyouareplanningtouseyourmeterathigherlatitudesthanyourpresentlatitude,
evaluatefromTableIthegravitydifferencebetweenyourlatitudeandthehighest
latitudeatwhichyouwillbeusingyourmeter.Addthisdifferencetothereading
obtainedinstepb)toobtainthevalueSUm.
d) Theremainingservicelifeexpressedindaysiscalculatedbydividingthedifference
(SUmaxSUmin.)bythevalueofthelineardriftrateforyourCG3.
E.g.youhavecalculatedforyourmeterfromequ.(A.4)SUmax=8800mGal,andthedrift
rateofyourmeteris0.51mGal/day.Assumingthat,atyourlatitudeof50degrees,you
havemeasuredSU=5012mGal,andthatyouwillbeusingyourmeteruptolatitudesof60
degrees,sothatSUm=(5012+847)mGal,thenthenumberofremainingservicedaysis
(88005012847)/0.51=5767days.
If, after many years of service, your CG3 has drifted out of range, then the spring
