This section provides an overview of the GTN 7XX product and a quick look Direct-To
at some important features. The GTN 7XX presents a full-color moving map
with navigation information to the pilot through a large-format display. Controls Proc
are a combination of rotary knobs and push-keys on the bezel with the color
display providing information as well as a touchscreen controls. The GTN 7XX Charts
has a 708 x 600 pixel, 6.9 inch LCD display.

The Volume knob located in the top left corner of the bezel controls audio

The GMA 35 marker beacon receiver and indicators are part of the ILS system.

The marker beacon lamps operate independently of any audio selection and
cannot be turned off. The GMA 35 can drive external marker lamps if required

Prior to beginning an ILS approach, select high or low marker sensitivity with Proc
the Marker Hi Sense key. The lighted green bar in the key illuminates for high

audio tones to be heard in the headsets. When the green bar in the Marker Wpt Info

Nearest Upon activating an RNAV GPS approach, you are given the option to skip any
non-required holding patterns during the initial transitions of the approach. In a

information about the NDB. The top left area of the page displays the NDB Started
identifier, name, city and state, and region. The top center area shows the Audio &
lat/lon coordinates of the NDB and the bearing (with direction arrow) and Xpdr Ctrl
distance to the NDB from your present position. The top right area shows the Com/Nav
frequency in a key.
Select another Waypoint by touching the Waypoint Identifier key, entering FPL
the characters for the desired name with the alphanumeric keypad, and then
touching the Enter key. You may also search through the list by touching the Direct-To
Find key and then choosing from the existing list of waypoints by touching the

Charts Traffic Advisories (TA) alert the crew to intruding aircraft. When traffic meets
the advisory criteria for the TA, a solid yellow circle symbol is generated. A Non-
Wpt Info threat Advisory, shown as an open white diamond, indicates that an intruding
aircraft is at greater than 1200 feet relative altitude or the distance is beyond five
Map NM. A Traffic Advisory that is beyond the selected display range is indicated by a
half TA symbol at the edge of the screen at the relative bearing of the intruder.

TIS also provides a vector line showing the direction in which the traffic

While TIS is a useful aid to visual traffic avoidance, it has some system
limitations that must be fully understood to ensure proper use. Many of these Charts
limitations are inherent in secondary radar surveillance. In other words, the
information provided by TIS will be no better than that provided to ATC. TIS Wpt Info
will only display aircraft with operating transponders installed.
Map
TIS relies on surveillance of the Mode S radar, which is a secondary
surveillance radar similar to the ATCRBS. TIS operation may be intermittent Traffic
during turns or other maneuvering. TIS is dependent on two-way, line-of-
sight communication between the aircraft and the Mode S radar. Whenever the Terrain
structure of the client aircraft comes between the transponder antenna (usually
located on the underside of the aircraft) and the ground-based radar antenna, Weather
the signal may be temporarily interrupted. Other limitations and anomalies

Map Reflectivity is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver.
Colors on the NEXRAD display directly correlate to the level of detected
Traffic reflectivity. Reflectivity as it relates to hazardous weather can be very complex.
The role of radar is essentially to detect moisture in the atmosphere. Simply

better it reflects. The size of the precipitation droplet is the most important FPL
factor in radar reflectivity. Because large drops in a small concentrated area are

return. Ice, dry snow, and dry hail have low reflective levels and often will not be

Updrafts and downdrafts in thunderstorms carry water through the cloud.
The more severe the drafts, the greater the number and size of the precipitation
Map droplets. With this in mind, the following interpretations can be made from what
is displayed on the weather radar. Avoid these areas by an extra wide margin.
Traffic In areas where the displayed target intensity is red or magenta (indicating
large amounts of precipitation), the turbulence is considered severe.

Areas that show steep color gradients (intense color changes) over thin bands
Weather or short distances suggest irregular rainfall rate and strong turbulence.

areas of possible inaccuracies in displayed intensity due to weakening of the Nearest

The Flight Information Services (FIS-B) function is capable of displaying text
and graphic weather information with GDL 88 installations. No subscription for
Audio &
Xpdr Ctrl FIS-B services is required with the GDL 88.
The FIS-B Function is a graphic weather display capable of displaying
Com/Nav
graphical weather information on UAT equipped installations. Graphical data is

overlaid on the map indicating the rainfall detected by ground based radar for a
specific area. Colors are used to identify the different NEXRAD echo intensities
Direct-To (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z). Reflectivity (designated by the
letter Z) is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver.
Proc The dBZ values increase as returned signal strength increases. Precipitation
intensity is displayed using colors corresponding to the dBZ values. Review the
Charts Limitations section in the front of this guide for the limitations that apply to the

The Nearest Airspace Page, alerts you to as many as 25 controlled or special

RAIM Prediction predicts if GPS coverage is available for your current location

that the GTN unit has adequate satellite geometry during your flight. The Trip
Direct-To
Planning feature allows the pilot to view desired track (DTK), distance (DIS),
estimated time en route (ETE), en route safe altitude (ESA) and estimated time of

1. Download the data to the data cards from the appropriate web site.

19.4 Glove Qualification Procedure Foreword
This procedure is used to qualify a specific glove for use with the GTN system
by guiding the user through a variety of tasks that use the touchscreen. Due to Getting

differences in finger size, glove size, and touchscreens between the 6XX or 7XX

unit, the qualification granted by this procedure is specific to the pilot/glove and Xpdr Ctrl
6XX or 7XX combination. GTN 7XX and 6XX units must be evaluated separately.
Com/Nav
The GTN touchscreen uses capacitive touch technology to sense the proximity
of skin to the display. A glove increases the distance between skin and the display FPL
glass and may reduce the ability of the GTN to detect touches. Therefore, when
selecting a glove for use with the GTN, thinner gloves tend to work better than Direct-To
thicker gloves. Leather gloves and gloves designed to work specifically with
capacitive touchscreen devices are often found to be acceptable. Additionally, Proc
altering your touch technique to use the pad of your finger to touch the unit
rather than the tip will increase the touchscreen sensitivity while using gloves. Charts
