PROJECT TITLE:

Restoring Mangrove Wetlands as a Means to Prevent Shoreline Erosion.

APPLICANTS:

Name, School, Grade

Stacy Assael, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Summary Aims of Project (c. 100 words or less):

State the problem

Aims of the project
Brief description of solution

Ex:
Florida State has approximately 825 miles of sandy shoreline, half of which are state-designated
critical erosion areas. As shorelines erode, Florida faces severe threats to its coastal communities,
coastal ecosystems, as well as its thriving tourism industry. One biological solution to decreasing
shorelines is to restore South Floridas natural mangrove fringe.

EXAMPLE PROPOSAL TEXT:

Introduction

Provide background info on topic

Explain causes of the issues

Ex:
South Florida is comprised of several unique ecosystems, each of which serves a plays an
important role. Mangrove habitats not only provide shelter and protection for marine life, but they
protect communities along the coast. Currently our coastlines are decreasing at a rate of a few feet
per year, decreasing the distance between the ocean and big cities such as Miami Beach. Restoring
mangrove fringes along the coastline will protect Miami-Dade County residents and the preserve
the tourism industry.

The natural process of erosion has been exaggerated by increased development and sea level rise
have significantly contributed to our disappearing coastline.

Description of impacts: biological, economic, social, etc.
Solution and Rationale

Explain your solution to the problem and why you think it will work
If possible, provide real-life examples of where this technique has been successful
If it is an original solution, provide supporting information are to why you believe it will be
successful
Ex:
Erosion is a natural occurrence that is present along every shoreline and is caused by waves and
currents. Mangroves help to reduce erosion by enhancing the accumulation of sediments along the
shoreline, as well as stabilizing existing substrate. Mangroves also protect the coastline from storm
surges by absorbing wave energy.

Price/Budget (Optional)

Net loss due to problem

Approximate cost of solution
o Ex: Miami-Dade County stands to lose $24.4 billion in tourism alone due to rising
sea levels, and loss of beaches. Mangrove seedlings cost $___________ per unit,
and cost $___________ to plant and maintain. Restored mangrove ecosystems will
also provide necessary habitats for juvenile fish, thus promoting increased health in
Floridas oceans, and contributing to local fisherman revenue and dive operations.
