Renewable Energy Situation in Lithuania

According to the last report of the Ministry of Energetic (2015) by 2020 Lithuania is required
to produce 23% of renewable energy, in 2015 21% was produced. Solar energy started to be
used only in 2009. In recent years usage of wind power has significantly increased. About
70% of electric energy is still produced from fossil fuels: coal and oil. In our region there are
no electric plants where renewable energy is made that is why our project is extremely
educational and important for the students.

Visiting the Kaunas Algirdas Brazauskas Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP)

hydroelectric-power-plant-khpp

The plant managed by Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba is the largest one in Lithuania which uses
renewable energy resources. Annual production currently meets 4% of total energy
consumption in Lithuania (over 40% of total energy generated from renewable resources).
Despite the small capacity the KHPP ensures the stability of the Lithuanian energy system.
The KHPP is one of two plants in the Lithuanian energy system that can be started
automatically in case of a total system blockout.

Visiting Klaipeda Geothermal Demonstration Plant http://www.geoterma.lt/?lang=2

A state company Geoterma was created in the year 1991 to develop and deepen the research
for geothermal production. In the year 1992 the company was reorganized into the Lithuanian
branch of the state's energy system - a company Geoterma " which in 1996 reorganized into
a JSC Lithuanian energy branch GEOTERMA.

The first geothermal wells of Lithuania were drilled in Vydmantai in the year 1989 and their
depths are up to two kilometres. The wells can be used for fitness improving e.g.
rehabilitation, treatment and recreation complex.
The town of Klaipeda was chosen because of the best location near Vydmantai.
Energy produced by the company is used to heat Klaipeda, the rest of energy is accumulated
and is used when needed.
